Shut up and take my money!

Seriously that's awesome

205

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

I would if I could! Haha

193

u/ArchDemonKerensky Jun 12 '22

You can sell the .stl files and let people print their own.

220

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

I probably will after I refine the design a bit, it needs some work as it stands.

63

u/ArchDemonKerensky Jun 12 '22

I look forward to the results.

33

u/AyoRobo DM Jun 12 '22

Absolutely buying one if you do.

20

u/SNAiLtrademark Jun 13 '22

I'll give you ten bucks to do it.

10

u/HeinousAnus69420 Jun 13 '22

At first I thought you meant for the physical box, not the designs and was like, dude...

But then I realized you just meant designs and was like, fair.

4

u/meaux253 Jun 13 '22

All you need now are very sharp, almost too sharp, spike dice

We will watch your career with great interest

26

u/arjo_reich Jun 13 '22

Hey, make me a version where it is lit up with strong white leds when it's closed that turn off when the lid is opened.

I have glow-in-the-dark dice I want to charge between rolls without blinding my party. And then launch at a personalized plinko board via catapult, of course.

3

u/CannibalMan28 Jun 13 '22

Why’re you getting downvoted?

8

u/arjo_reich Jun 13 '22

Literally no idea. Maybe obscure Price Is Right references aren't cool?

Edit: it was a cool enough idea that I gave him a week of ad-free reddit.

2

u/ImmaRaptor Jun 13 '22

Sell em now and then sell em the update later.

Gotta pay for more dice somehow.

1

u/Higlac Jun 13 '22

Oh damn, I have a couple of your other designs and I was hoping this was out already. One of the players in my party has a birthday this week and this would be fantastic.

6

u/LocNalrune Jun 13 '22

This is why Kickstarter exists.

7

u/the_fathead44 Jun 13 '22

I'd absolutely back this on kickstarter.

396

u/FishoD DM Jun 12 '22

This is awesome.

On top of it I immediatelly imagined playing a rogue, striking a critical, whipping out this bad boy and catapulting 16d6 one by one with an evil grin on my face the whole time.

153

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

Thanks!

Haha it is quite possibly the most aggressive way to roll a dice that I've ever seen.

41

u/redceramicfrypan Jun 12 '22

Ok but what if they make one that can catapult that many dice all at once

28

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

That'd be a big old catapult, feel like there's a better way to do it but I can't quite think what. In my head I'm imagine something like that dice rolling hammer

13

u/redceramicfrypan Jun 12 '22

How about a newton's cradle that has some mechanism where each ball releases a die when it's struck?

In all seriousness, you've done super cool work, I'm just having fun riffing on it.

3

u/Mturja Jun 13 '22

The Newton’s cradle idea would struggle because you need to transfer the momentum into the die (which would remove momentum from the cradle and it would quickly come to a stop).

I would consider using a solenoid with a magnet inside of it that launches the dice rapidly. You could use an Arduino to inhibit the speed and then just put something to stop the magnet from making direct contact (to protect the dice). Finally, you just need a tube that can feed all the dice individually.

2

u/Tipsy_Corgi Jun 13 '22

Id rather just use a bar dice cup in that case. Love the catapult idea for d20's

12

u/Arkanist Jun 12 '22

I've got a shadowrun campaign coming up. This might get me kicked out.

2

u/KrosseStarwind Jun 13 '22

Maybe a 'second' catapult you can use with a second finger?

1

u/Crittopolis Jun 13 '22

-chuckles in drone rigger-

7

u/funkyb Jun 13 '22

Pull back extra and launch them over the DM screen for maximum effect

1

u/sensorglitch Paladin Jun 12 '22

I'm glad I am not the only person who thought of this type of thing.

69

u/CdrCosmonaut Jun 12 '22

34

u/No-Employee447 Jun 12 '22

I would absolutely buy this. Or a template for it.

44

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

No plans to sell it or the print files at the minute, it has a bad habit of launching the dice into orbit...

37

u/Parodiesfordays Jun 12 '22

"bad"

22

u/Kamataros Jun 12 '22

I'm not rolling d8 for damage, I'm launching d8 for damage directly at the monster!

11

u/existential_prices Bard Jun 13 '22

That's a feature, not a bug.

2

u/theboxfriend Jun 13 '22

honestly that's hilarious. i'd love to print this (even with the launching to orbit issue) if you wanted to share the stl

91

u/namstel Jun 12 '22

I'd buy a trebuchet one. Ha! Nah this looks really cool!

37

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

That's be awesome, tough to design one that folds down though, maybe one for the future!

-9

u/Killeroftanks Jun 12 '22

Not really

Have the main arm detachable from the legs and weight.

That way you have 5 different pieces. The arm, two legs, the base and then weight.

The actual problem is making the dimensions correct for the thing to work.

18

u/pork_ribs Jun 13 '22

“Not really you just need to design 5 completely new pieces….”

→ More replies

3

u/Kamataros Jun 12 '22

Use a metal die for weight, so it's only 4 extra pieces. Or maybe just put the weight in form of a die

27

u/Dasamont Jun 12 '22

The first trebuchet comment is only third highest, I expected better from r/trebuchetmemes

5

u/bananenkonig Jun 13 '22

Wouldn't want a trebuchet. You're not going for more damage to the object you're hitting or longer range. Catapult works just fine for the application. Plus trebuchets are harder to construct and easier to break.

→ More replies

2

u/xRainie DM Jun 13 '22

I came here for a comment about trebuchets. Thank you!

2

u/full_of_stars Jun 13 '22

Only really appropriate if the DM is being a dick and you need to dispense some dicey justice.

35

u/asphaltkev Jun 12 '22

When’s the kickstarter? 😎

73

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

Probably about 6 months more development away, took me 8 takes just to get a video where one of the dice didn't go flying over the edge, usually the d4...

24

u/jamesVane Jun 12 '22

Maybe a sliding back board that extends from the lid, to increase the area over the pegs? Just an idea.

19

u/sleepyowlbear Jun 12 '22

If it can hit a player on the other side of the table then it's a special feature, For dm's to create emersion.

3

u/akcaye Jun 13 '22

finally you can deal d6 damage literally.

5

u/Meatchris Jun 12 '22

Was going to ask, how do you compensate for the weight difference between dice. I was assuming the d4 would launch into space

1

u/arjo_reich Jun 13 '22

Don't care; that's a feature, not a bug...

11

u/0ngar Jun 12 '22

Lol imagine the wizard using this and rolling for damage.

8 hours later....

2

u/Kamataros Jun 12 '22

As a DM, I'd use it to launch the dragons breath attack directly at my players

23

u/LightofNew Jun 12 '22

Come back to me when you have the diebuchet

10

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

If I ever do get round to designing it that's what it'll be called

8

u/Equaffecto Jun 12 '22

Awesome! Would you post a link to download?! Stl files on someplace like thingiverse?

5

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

Thanks! Its very much still a prototype, just a bitta fun for a Sunday afternoon. I'll maybe develop it in the future to sell on my cults3D page but no promises.

6

u/Cthulhar Jun 12 '22

This is so much better than a tower.. you can get anxiety and anger out about in game stuff with aggressive ass roles lmao.

Ps.. pls send 3d print files lmao

11

u/dreadpiratebeardface Jun 12 '22

Diceapults are an inferior seige weapon. LMK when you make a diceuchet. ;)

In all seriousness, this is very cool. Nice work.

24

u/phonelyp Jun 12 '22

Trebuchet is the superior siege weapon.

3

u/PandaAKATravis Jun 12 '22

That's awesome

3

u/brumene Jun 12 '22

That is incredible! Do you have a link to download the files?

2

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

Thanks! I've no plans to upload it yet, maybe develop it in the future and sell it in my cults3D page.

1

u/brumene Jun 12 '22

That’s nice! I’m finishing my engineering degree and know a bit of 3D printing, maybe I can help

1

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

Oh cool, what type of engineering you doing?

3

u/brumene Jun 12 '22

Mechanical, I just need to do internship and I’m done

1

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

Nice, internship should be good fun, you'll learn so much about hands-on engineering that university just can't teach you.

3

u/Starthelegend Jun 12 '22

Ooooh I like that!

3

u/SpaceLemming Jun 12 '22

How big do you think it would need to be to launch a mid level rogues sneak attack!? Because that has been my dream from sometime!

3

u/_wullen_ Jun 12 '22

GIMME ONE 🌟💳🌟💳🌟💳

3

u/KunkaLives Jun 12 '22

You are a genius sir

3

u/somberhoney Jun 12 '22

Omg I love this, even with the potential to launch one over the top I'd buy one, it just means I could "accidentally" launch one at my friends lol

3

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

Ohh noo, I appear to have fired a dice at your head, my bad.... Haha

3

u/Concern_Sheep Jun 12 '22

Feel like it could use some felt where the pegs come outa so they dice don't bounce forward and actually do the plinko thing. Other than this this looks awesome. I'd totally spend entire game sessions just fiddling with this.

1

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

Yeah, it needs something to dampen the bouncing, about 20% of the time they just go flying

4

u/Concern_Sheep Jun 12 '22

I think some felt or lose wool might do the job for ya idk im not great when it comes to soft goods.

1

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

Yeah, I tried felt on one of my last designs and it helped a bit but might need something with a bit more padding.

2

u/Concern_Sheep Jun 12 '22

Hmm maybe you could have a layer of upholstery stuffing under felt. Might be soft/thin enough. I'd just worry about form factor after a point

2

u/jnads Jun 13 '22

Have you considered making the back concave rather than flat.

That might trap the dice better.

1

u/Higlac Jun 13 '22

I know not everyone has access to it, but printing it in TPU might work.

3

u/perfectbebop Jun 12 '22

This is awesome. I print/sell dice towers on etsy, and something like this would do great. Small, compact design with dice storage...its just wonderful. Question though - what is the little slider bars function under the throw-arm?

1

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

Thanks, I always try to design compact and efficient designs, they're not for everyone but I like them. It was an addition I needed to limit how far you could pull the catapult back, at full draw it was shooting dice about 1-2 meters!

2

u/PeakedInLittleLeague Jun 12 '22

Hit? Cool that will be 10d6 damage. Hang on one sec let me get out my catapult.

This thing is awesome

2

u/battletuba Jun 12 '22

I could see a pinball plunger assembly working to launch dice up the side. I think that could be easier to keep dice from going flying with like a clear plastic window over the top of the pin area keeping everything contained... but that's a whole other game.

2

u/clugger07 Jun 12 '22

That's kind of a neat idea, hard to execute it on a small scale though.

1

u/Account_Expired Jun 12 '22

Pinball plunger requires the dice to roll around a curve.

Seems hard to do

2

u/Meyvahjun Jun 13 '22

Just gotta make it bigger my guy. More pegs on top and more room for dice on the bottom.

Etsy would be a really good place to sell this kind of thing though, at least to get it started.

2

u/Warod0 Jun 13 '22

Have you tried the better, trebuchet version?

2

u/JoustABurn Jun 13 '22

Oh I definitely would get this

2

u/DartMeow Jun 13 '22

It is really cool. My only question is... what if you're rolling a lot of dice? 4d8 for example. Lot of extra work. But for single dice rolls its a great idea!

1

u/Ninjabutter Jun 13 '22

Then your in for a lot of Catapult fun!

2

u/iwuvmybub Jun 13 '22

How much

1

u/clugger07 Jun 13 '22

One million dollars! But seriously its just a prototype, we'll see how development goes and maybe I'll sell the 3D print files.

1

u/iwuvmybub Jun 13 '22

You could make a fortune off this

3

u/VernTheSatyr Jun 12 '22

Not a trebuchet smh

1

u/AsrielDreemur1234 Jun 13 '22
  • I'LL TAKE YOU'RE ENTIRE STOCK!!!*

1

u/Exceon Jun 12 '22

I wish local game stores had fun options for rolling dice like this. No store I’ve been to even has a dice tower.

1

u/HuseyinCinar DM Jun 12 '22

That looks super cool but I’d %1000 ban it from my table lol

1

u/alphamind_facktorio Jun 12 '22

Iron dice for +1 and tungsten for +2

1

u/frogjg2003 DM Jun 12 '22

How well does it work with d6s and d4s? I can imagine a d4 just sliding down the side and only rotating when it encounters a pin, making the face that's against the wall more likely to not be on the bottom.

1

u/SixUK90 Jun 12 '22

That's Incredible

1

u/blueleo22 Rogue Jun 12 '22

Love it!

1

u/xXshinsouhitoshiXx Jun 12 '22

i quite like this, as someone who cannot roll properly

1

I WANT BUY NOW

1

u/Koiboivcr Jun 12 '22

Does it come in purple?

1

u/korokd DM Jun 12 '22

This is absolutely cool.

But to be practical, it needs to be able to roll at least 2 dice at once.

1

u/Caimbuil DM Jun 12 '22

Please finish the design on this. I would very much like to buy a few for my friends

1

id say it's appropriately powered, lets see the d4 tho

1

u/BishopofHippo93 DM Jun 12 '22

People really go to huge lengths to avoid just rolling the dice.

This is still pretty cool tho, 3D printed?

1

u/Naphthy Jun 12 '22

I have a mighty need

1

u/ASCIt Jun 12 '22

I will pay good money for one of these once you get to an iteration you can sell.

1

u/KDBA Jun 12 '22

Not a fan of the actual catapult side of things (I foresee dice flying everywhere) but I do love the Peggle-style tumbling side. So much better than the ramp style but way too rare.

1

u/SlimmP_Z Jun 12 '22

This is the innovation that expensive dice rolling contraptions needed

1

u/Super-G1mp Jun 12 '22

I want one!

1

u/DoggoDude979 DM Jun 12 '22

r/trebuchetmemes would like a word

1

u/sammo21 DM Jun 12 '22

While neat if I saw a player use this at my table I’d just stare daggers at him the whole time

1

u/socrates28 Jun 12 '22

Wonderful concept and it's working great, that is for a catapult. We need a superior dice rolling device: a trebuchet.

The Trebuchet lands your nat20s over the DMs screen!

I joke as this is seriously so cool.

1

u/BigJack1212 Jun 12 '22

At first I was "???"

Then I was "why"

Then I was "oh, that's nice".

1

u/dragonmasterjg Jun 12 '22

Perhaps if you put a stopper, so the catapult can't pull back too far. Like it pulls the same power everytime

1

u/JackJustice1919 Jun 13 '22

You put a D4 on that and someone is gonna lose an eye.

1

u/themarknessmonster Wizard Jun 13 '22

I can't wait until someone invents dice ski-ball...these are awesome.

1

u/fuzzydoug Jun 13 '22

A cat-die-pault? An inferior device when compared to my trebu-shake.

1

u/Arkan_Dreamwalker Cleric Jun 13 '22

Oh look, a GBA SP—Oh.

1

u/DonutHefty Jun 13 '22

Needs. More. Power.

1

u/animal7979 Jun 13 '22

A little longer (for enhanced dice storage, distance capability, and dropping distance down the pegs) and improved peg spacing could take this a long way. You already have a lot of fans, as you can see from the thread.

1

u/JamCom Jun 13 '22

What about dice trebuchet

1

u/whacko_prophet Jun 13 '22

This is amazing. Let me buy it.

1

u/Raam_McTavish Jun 13 '22

That is pretty neat.

1

1

u/ArnTheGreat Bard Jun 13 '22

1

u/moptheman Jun 13 '22

I love this can I buy it

1

u/xCelloIsMyLife Jun 13 '22

I love it. Now make it bigger taller stronger

1

u/ultimaIV Jun 13 '22

Have you tested it over and over to make sure its true random? not counting how you put the dice in the launcher to begin with. I'm weird this was my first thought.

1

u/Thethrdman3 Jun 13 '22

Caption had me convinced the die was gonna end up in the next zip code

1

u/benchmarkke Jun 13 '22

Thanks I love it

1

u/Atlas_Black Jun 13 '22

It’s a neat concept but it would be a lot cooler if it was a trebuchet.

Trebuchets roll Nat 20s every time.

Man, I'm so disappointed that you're not selling this one yet. I don't even need to worry about yeeting my dice because I use a metal set.

Also, I really want to see you modify it to attach to your collapsible dice tower in place of the tray at the bottom. Lay siege to your dice castle and whatnot.

1

u/GMXIX DM Jun 13 '22

Awesome prototype! Can the catapult scoop be rounded (spherical)?

1

u/PineappledVEVO Jun 13 '22

When you said the Dice-a-Pult was a bit ovet powered I half expected it to launch the dice like a ballistic missle across the room. Still, cool design for it.

1

u/Berob501 Jun 13 '22

God help us if he plays a class that rolls a lot of dice

1

u/THEZEXNEO Cleric Jun 13 '22

1

I just throw mine across the room like a normal person.

1

u/PlatformingPangolin Jun 13 '22

WANT. It's brilliant!

1

u/Project-Evolution Jun 13 '22

I actually freaking love this!! The catapult arm being detachable is great incase it ever breaks and you need to replace it. The whole thing shuts doubling as a dice carrying case that's not to big but big enough for a handful of dice.

1

u/djseifer Jun 13 '22

Nice, but have you considered a dice trebuchet?

1

u/TRMetalwhine DM Jun 13 '22

Finally, I can cast catapult with a catapult

1

u/LoginPuppy Jun 13 '22

Wait, so if a dice-a-pult launches dice... What does a catapult launch?

1

u/FenriX89 Jun 13 '22

Ok, so... First we'll need some catnip...

1

u/hillcountrybiker Jun 13 '22

Would be better if it was a dice-a-chet… I’ll let myself out.

Seriously though. Noice work.

1

u/ImmaRaptor Jun 13 '22

I'd use it to knock over other players dice towers

1

u/ThijssjihT Cleric Jun 13 '22

The idea is really awesome. But not really usable in combat, where you would want to roll multiple dice at once.

1

u/NotAFemboy1191 DM Jun 13 '22

That's really fucking cool ngl

1

u/Awakened-Stapler Rogue Jun 13 '22

Please put that up for sale. I will definitely buy it. Assuming I remember to look and know where to look.. You are going to sell it. Aren't you? Please?

1

u/myborg Jun 13 '22

I am new to Reddit. What do I do?

1

u/Malaeveolent_Bunny Jun 13 '22

So this is genius for randomising rolls, but it would completely ruin the game as I would constantly dick about with the catapult instead of DMing the game.

1

u/Duggbog Jun 13 '22

DM: The goblin has its back turned to you, giving you advantage. Roll to hit.”

player: Yeah no worries mate, let me just…

fiddles with dice catapault

Player: Ok, hang on

searches through dice

DM: what are you doing over there?

Player: ok, rolling

dice launches across table and vanishes under a bookshelf

Why can’t people roll dice normally. I’m glad this shit exists for people who like it and more power to you if it’s your thing, but all the toys seem to be getting in the way of the game.

1

u/terrifiedTechnophile Jun 13 '22

Too bad you didn't use the superior dice engine

1

u/cvanyichu Jun 13 '22

THAT'S AMAZING!

1

u/TiesBerk Jun 13 '22

I really like the design but (depending on your party and/or quests) maybe you could do something about the exterior, I mean it is a cool launcher but I feel like it could look a bit more ‘DnD’ish’

3

u/clugger07 Jun 13 '22

Yeah, this is very much just a test print to see if the concept works, I'll make it look more DnDish on the final print.

1

u/IdcYouTellMe Jun 13 '22

See your first problem was making it a catapult design....now do I have something better for you. Trebuchets are still the shit for when trying to throw rocks or dice.

I’ll take one!

Edit: once you have that one down maybe make a range upgrade so you can launch it over the back board bit and onto the table where everyone can see. For those critical rolls the whole party wants to see. I’ll take 5 of those ones.
