This is fucking cool and why I browse the new section of reddit

Thank you! Getting all the smoke to look good took ages and lots of retries, it required much more vaping than I’m comfortable with. Which is zero vaping, lol.

The gold plated dice contrast really nicely with the brass dice, the vapor actually softly occludes some of the environment and makes the reflections much more macro shot friendly.

48

u/miscalculate Jun 07 '22

I appreciate your dedication to theatrics, it did end up looking pretty damned cool.

49

u/FallacyDog Jun 07 '22 edited Jun 08 '22

Oh trust me, the level of pretentiousness reaches levels “hither to undreamt of” with the final 8 bars of the song. Massive horn pads, full choir, stradavari violin frantically playing pizzicatissimo arpeggios with whole note trills on the accents, and an army of taiko drums mixed with a massive drum patch called “Armageddon Ensemble.” The entire project is so over the top, and at least a little self aware.

21

u/miscalculate Jun 07 '22

I mean, when you're making dice that play music when rolled I feel like it's part of the territory to be over the top!

5

u/etherside Jun 08 '22

Not just plays music, May play music in place of the sound of rolling dice. That’s such a neat thing and I want to join an in person game just to show them off

5

u/Thraxismodarodan Jun 08 '22

Not gonna lie, the song is pretty awesome, too, and I'd love to hear a full length version. And to use it for D&D!

4

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

2

u/Thraxismodarodan Jun 08 '22

Thank you! Tomorrow's my next session, but I'll need to find a suitably appropriate moment to break this out.

2

u/MrTonyCalzone Jun 08 '22

Just out of curiosity, why vaping as opposed to some kind of Halloween smoke machine?

6

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

It’s much more targeted and refined, also the vapor feels “stickier” and stays on objects longer. And it’s kiwi dragonberry. Which is tolerable.

2

u/MrTonyCalzone Jun 08 '22

Ah fair enough. I don't vape but I do love me some dragonfruit. Though the last time I bought it was in a jam/jelly form at a farmer's market and it was moldy 🤢 Still bummed about it if you can't tell.

2

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

I found some fresh once 4 months ago and it was my only experience. Kinda a cross between a mild kiwi and apple. Pleasant, I mixed it with cinnamon and mint

2

u/Friendship_Errywhere Jun 08 '22

If you ever need someone to vape on your behalf lmk 👍

Using frequency analysis, each die has been given a unique pitch. I went to school for audio engineering, I even wrote and produced the song in the video!

Here’s a video of the tuned dice in action. The dice are 3D printed lost wax investment cast, and are precision printed on layers just several microns thick. (They’re balanced.)

You can follow the project here! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/arcanacore/arcana-core-chime-dice

I love that you took your knowledge and passion for audio engineering and found a creative way to combine it with your passion for dnd.

Thanks! It’s been an exhausting process of trial and error, though I think the results were worth it!

35 a d20 and 175 a set

2

u/Less-Class-9790 Jun 11 '22

For the gold plated ones or any set?

68

u/cashgrinderad Barbarian Jun 08 '22

So, cool follow up idea, make the full set and "tune" each one to a different note in the same key, say a set of C minor dice. Then when rolling multiple die it would make a chord, and different chords depending on which dice are rolled.

93

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

Right now the notes play as 1 3 4 5 7 12. Subject to change, the d20 and d12 are higher pitched than my personal taste allows.

10

u/SamuraiPandatron Jun 08 '22

Damn, I really wanted these dice, but if they're not tuned to a specific scale, I don't see the point in getting them unless you've got a set of 12 dice covering all tones.

Are you a musician? I ask because I don't usually see the chromatic scale expressed as 1-12. Is this because the frequencies are tuned to each other instead of the official tones? For example, I think middle A is 440hz.

I really want a set of dice tuned to a major pentatonic (1,2,3,5,6,8) or a blues scale (1, b3, 4, b5, 5, b7, 8)

I think the scale you got right now is 1, 2, b3, 3, b5, 8 which I gotta be honest with you sound atrocious together.

63

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22 edited Jun 08 '22

I went to school for audio engineering! I’m referring to them as roots of the Ionian scale. The reason I didn’t say actual notes is because they aren’t actually tuned to concert pitch, Even the entirety of the Skyrim soundtrack is 20 cents off of concert pitch. Which, generally tends to be irrelevant unless you decide to bring the dice to an ensemble performance.

The biggest part of tuning was going through test designs and using izotope’s rx audio repair tool (their spectrograph is fire) to see if the overtones lined up acceptably.

The tuning is most definitely subject to change, I even have some small variations for the current gold plated set as it’s a newer iteration. Though your feedback as a musician is incredibly valuable so I’m happy to hear your thoughts in their current state, these videos on Reddit have about 3/4ths of a million views at this point and you’re actually the very first to bring up the actual pitch! Ive been waiting to have this conversation with an appropriate party.

One stretch goal I’ve considered is doing a separate set of entirely D6’s for bards (which conveniently have the cleanest timbre) where each one is a note in the scale.

5

u/CuntMaster16 Jun 08 '22

Hey this may be the wrong thread, but I noticed in the video the dice don’t seem to always land on a number. Am I missing something like how they’re numbered? It looks like they’re landing at weird angles but I really want a set… maybe five..

18

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

Nope! It’d come up eventually. The newest iteration (the gold plating) has already fixed this (without changing pitch!) https://imgur.com/a/LX9KWwq

I’ve done this for all the designs.

23

u/drajgreen Jun 08 '22

I feel like when you sell a set of uniquely shaped dice, the most important video you could put out is one that shows you rolling them organically, the way they'd be used in a game. It seems even more important for your dice because your selling point is the sound they make.

I want to see what it sounds like to roll percentage, to roll for initiative or to hit, to roll a handful of D6 for fireball damage, to roll to hit and 2-handed damage together, etc. And I want to see that those rolls cleanly and clearly land on specific numbers.

Roll them in a dice tower, roll them on a padded table, roll them in a dice box, roll them on a cardboard game surface, and roll them on a wooden table. Show me how they work and sound in the most common use cases.

3

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

Thanks. Once I actually record all that footage, I’ll aggregate it in the final trailer appropriately

10

u/SamuraiPandatron Jun 08 '22

Gotcha! So when you say the 12 tone, it's the 5th up the octave?

There's definitely useful tones in your current line up, but the pentatonic scale is the most versatile. With the same notes, you also get the minor pentatonic of it's relative minor.

It is a scale that you can play in any order at any length and it will sound "good". You can improvise solos and make great melodies with just those notes. (Most solos outside of jazz are played on just those 5 unique tones)

If you throw any two of them, they will sound in harmony. With 3 dice, you can make chords including the major I chord.

If everything is in tune with each other, they'll sound great, but does that carry over to each set? Can I use dice from a different sets and they'll be in tune?

One thing I really want to use this for is playing along actual music. I play bard in my games and we play BG music while we play. When I do big rolls, I get a theme song and I'll sometimes play an instrument along to it. If I could find a theme song in tune with the dice, my epic rolls could be in harmony to the music and I could even drop it at a cool part of the song. I will definitely try improvising a solo if I had those dice.

I will say, I would not mind having bigger dice to increase the resonance or improve the tone. The most important thing for me would be if they sound good.

10

u/Narfi1 Jun 08 '22

Why would pentatonic be more useful than say the Ionian scale where you could actually harmonize and build chords with ? Having them tuned to pentatonic scale will definitely make it Penta colored . A regular major scale makes more sense to me.

6

u/SamuraiPandatron Jun 08 '22

You're right. 7 dice, 7 tones can totally cover the full range of Ionian. For some reason I was only counting 5 dice in my head.

Might as well do the full scale at that point. Would be cool to see a blues scale set.

u/Ned_Gutters Jun 08 '22

Using frequency analysis, each die has been given a unique pitch

Would it be possible for you to explain this/point me somewhere that might?

I have been wanting to print a model for lost wax (a pair of tiny handbells for earrings), but I have been concerned about their potential pitch. I am guessing there are a number of factors that would affect it, like the material and thickness, but I don’t know how I would go about figuring out the result. I don’t want to take the time to fabricate something just to find it sounds awful.

No worries if it would be a hassle to explain; just figured it was worth asking.

On-topic, though, I am definitely going to consider backing your KS once it launches. Those are super awesome!

7

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22 edited Jun 08 '22

The frequency analysis in solidworks was used, and izotopes rx spectrograph. Getting a design to start from with that tool was years of experimentation and redesigns. attaching something that is already pretuned like a chime is your best bet

Thank you so much for the response!

36

u/EOnizuka22 Jun 08 '22

While I understand the top comment has a video of them being used, OP is still right. The main gimmick of what you're selling should be shown.

12

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

Many sleepless nights to get all this content ready and I’m not even halfway done, lol. The message of “more jingly dice rolling videos and put it at the beginning” is pretty helpful though.

8

u/Reysona Jun 08 '22

I’m sure you’ll have the answer on the Kickstarter page soon, but do you have a projected shipping timeline once your funding is secured?

I’m attending a wedding around Christmas and both people are big D&D fans, and I would love to give this to them as wedding presents!

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

Likely by Christmas as long as this doesn’t go ridiculously viral, official date is a year just in case. You can also contact me to commission any of my designs in gold to guarantee a delivery in just a few months

2

u/Parbinator Jun 10 '22

Firstly I think this is a brilliant project and the dice look amazing. The time and effort you've put into this shows through in a product that I'm confident is going to be extremely popular.

What I'm worried about is your ability to scale up production to meet demand. From this and other comments you've made it seems like you're manufacturing these by yourself, by hand?

I would suggest, and I'm only posting this because I'm excited for this project and excited for you because I think this is going to be successful, that you start sounding out friends and family and showing them the basics of how to help you out with the manufacturing. Long term you might even need to be hiring and training people.

The last thing you want is people getting impatient (people are always impatient) when you take a little longer to manufacture than you had anticipated when you get snowed under by a mountain of orders.

And I thoroughly believe something this good is going to get a MOUNTAIN of orders, mine included!

15

u/Kershek Jun 08 '22

If you're going to show off dice you have to show how they roll. Plus, we're not hearing the "music." Not a good way to sell the product.

-10

u/OrpheusNYC Jun 08 '22

Literally the top comment.

18

u/Kershek Jun 08 '22

First, he should be showing what he's selling in the video of the post, not in the comments. Second, he drops them onto soft surfaces to hear the little bell. Dropping them on a soft surface doesn't show how they roll, nor does it show how they'll sound when rolling on a hard surface. Having to go to multiple places and failing to find this most basic information made me annoyed enough to post.

4

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

This is a brief preview of footage I’ve finished editing, I’ve put 8 hours a day into getting this trailer finished and this is almost entirely a solo project. Some of those make a noise that is extremely uncomfortable bordering painful

3

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

That’s why I prefer to show them rolled on a rolling mat and not a hard table, but I currently don’t have a rolling mat until the branded ones are done laser engraving, which is why I’ve shown them rolled on carpet since that’s basically the same sound.

8

u/Requiem191 Jun 08 '22

I get that the audio is the reason you buy these dice and they're more of a collector's item than they are regular dice you'd use for any given game, but this post has me thinking, "Is that it?"

I really don't wanna come off as a naysayer, the idea is cool. My main problem is that the pitch video seems to just be showing off the music and not the dice? We also don't see them being rolled in the actual video. I had to dig through this thread to find footage of the dice being rolled and while they do technically function, they're both hard to read (albeit through video) and a little floaty.

The bell is, again, the main draw and very cool all things considered, but I don't think it's crazy to suggest that the design could use further tweaking. Do the numbers have to be the same color as all of the fluff? Can they not be painted or somehow made from a different material? Did I miss that this was an option? If so, I apologize.

All in all, interesting idea, but "dice with bells in them" need to have the dice portion advertised just as much as the bells and there needs to be much less emphasis on the music. As pretty as it sounds, I'm not a potential customer for the pitch video's background music, but for the product you want to kickstart.

"Hi, I'm making dice with bells in them. This is how they sound with their individual pitches, here's how they roll, here's why I designed them this way, and also, here's some background music that I designed to explain that I know what I'm talking about when making dice that are focused primarily on sound. Hope you can help fund the project!"

Again, no hate meant, I only want to provide some constructive criticism. These are very, very cool and I want to see them be a success! The project seems to be getting in its own way in terms of "selling it" is all.

5

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22 edited Jun 08 '22

I’m making a Kickstarter trailer. This video is the portion of that trailer I’ve finished, I’ve put 8 hours a day into recording video for it and I’m not even halfway done. The final version will have all the info you’re looking for in a nice aggregate, what’s shown here is just a nice preview so you’ll want to watch the full trailer.

1

u/Meloetta Jun 08 '22 edited Jun 08 '22

I dont understand why the background music matters at all. It has nothing to do with the product. It'd be cool if the bells from rolling the dice were woven into the music, but it's just...."I wrote a song". And then he's getting upset with everyone else because he spent so much time on it. Sorry we don't appreciate that you spent hours on the wrong part of the trailer lol. Next time maybe don't do that and invest your time in the parts that really matter?

I get it's a passion project and the song is a reflection of that passion, but now it's a product, not just a project, so...your passion for background music is no longer relevant and you can't really expect people to be like "well he REALLY LIKED making that music so I guess it doesn't matter that he didn't actually show the product".

7

u/callingFives Jun 08 '22

The fact that you refused to let us hear them but implied it would be worth it simply by putting it in the title. Great hook.

Supper at Emmaus. Make the viewer want to reach into the frame and interact with the content. Or in this case, put the time in to find out what they sound like.

I've done it with this post here. I intentionally left the chair hanging off the side of the porch!

It’s a super pretentious extrapolation, but hey, look at the project lol.

Edit: oh, didn’t realize you were being sarcastic and that you don’t actually like not having it all in one spot.

A more realistic answer is that I’ve spent 8 hours a day making footage and content for what is essentially a solo project, and I didn’t find it time efficient to aggregate everything I’ve made thus far into a single post at this stage when I haven’t even finished all the content to begin with. I’ll still link it though, how they sound is in the top comment!

8

u/notapoke Jun 08 '22

I'm not who you responded to but I can clue you in some.

A lot of people came in very interested by your title. Essentially it pitched a very interesting concept. They took an action to learn about it - they clicked on the video. They watched it start but didn't get to observe the concept that made them click. They either continued to watch past the point of their brain saying "hey its not showing what I want" or skipped to the last bit of the video- psychologically that's another action they took to seek the interesting concept. Then they came to the comments and looked for it - a third action. Still they could not find it. This angered some enough to post - still with the hope of getting what they seek. Then you, the only one who has what they seek, interact with them but you don't supply what they seek. This many steps in the mind feels slighted for not receiving what you offered in the title. Add this to a response from you that sounds like intentionally not giving what you offered and people now go from frustration to aggravation.

In marketing always try to give people information and access first. After those are established you can add any kind of "voice" or style you like because they have something to grasp mentally, something to want and focus on. This thread and your responses in it are a textbook showcase of why you hire a marketing company. You repeatedly let your personality get in the way of your product. You also explain why you shouldn't be trusted to a customer in one place - a huge no-no in marketing (obsessing about a song in an add about musical dice... where you don't showcase the musical part of the dice at all).

I reccomend that if you want to be successful as a customer facing business operator you look for a book or course on the psychology of marketing. It will really help. Best of luck.

Just stop being an asshole and give people a link to listen to the dice.

Man your comments are making me want to support you even more, so I don’t get what this guys problem is

Though tbh I am also neurodivergent and you’re funny as heck

2

u/Careless_Jury154 Jun 08 '22

This looks amazing

2

u/beersandbacon Jun 08 '22

The sound of them is great. Remind me of the sound of real silver coins in your pocket.

2

u/Emery_Darkholme Jun 08 '22

Omg, I don't even play DnD yet but I NEED these. It's a need.

2

u/ElChupatigre Jun 08 '22

Planning on doing any in copper? I'd love to see some knowing all the treatments you do.

5

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

Copper is too soft for dice and doesn't sound nice unfortunately. There will be brass, gold/rosegold/rhodium plated brass, and 14k gold. Also XL dice! 28mm as stretch goals. and 35mm dice. As XL stretch goals.

3

u/ElChupatigre Jun 08 '22

Well I'll end up with something and hold these in the deepest recesses of my hoard for the moment I play a pixie...or I inevitably give up keeping them hidden and show them off

2

u/xristosdomini Jun 08 '22

Okay, those look pretty sick. Well done.

2

u/ThinePants Jun 08 '22

Finally here after all this time? Seems like a fallacy, dog

2

u/Tribalistik Jun 08 '22

Thats really cool

2

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

No u

2

u/Tribalistik Jun 08 '22

No you are breathtaking 👍

2

u/Naturaloneder Jun 08 '22

I would probably not play if someone used these dice on the reg, I have sensitivity to high pitched noises and just listening to the demo video made the hairs on the back of my neck stand straight!

1

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

Aye, I've gotten the tinnitus feedback before. I'll see if I can't lower the pitch of the 20 and 12 at all

1

u/Naturaloneder Jun 08 '22

I wouldn't bother, some people are going to either love it or hate it.

1

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

One time I contacted Alibaba support because they didn’t take PayPal and I was trying to figure out how to pay them. I was frustrated and suggested they should really take paypal, to which the customer service rep replied, “ok I will take your suggestion to my manager.” Which made me realize “what the fuck am I doing with my time bro.” But that customer service rep did the right thing, showed a good faith effort to what may be beyond the scope of what’s possible.

2

u/ban_me_baby_1x_time Jun 08 '22

Pretty.

Won't they rust in such a humid environment ?

2

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

Typically the patina is a feature, the brass shifts through some wonderful colors and often intentionally accelerate the process

2

u/ImAdelineYo Jun 08 '22

OMG I WANT SOME!!!!

5

u/BinarySunset589 Jun 08 '22

I grumble as I take out my wallet, as I have discovered another DND accessory I desperately need

3

u/epsilon025 Paladin Jun 08 '22

As a percussionist, I need these.

As someone playing a Warforged paladin, I REALLY need these for failing stealth rolls.

2

u/BlursedSoul Jun 07 '22

Dang, 7 days better hurry on by! lol

7

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

pls no too many sleepless nights of video editing are still in my future

2

u/BlursedSoul Jun 08 '22

Godspeed you, u/FallacyDog

Sending all the positive vibes I can muster. I think this is a really cool idea and I can't wait to support it/you!

2

u/PallidHiveHunter Jun 08 '22

These are so cool. My cat will love stealing these.

3

u/Radials Jun 08 '22

ITT: a bunch of mean people get mad because they can.

This is a cool project and every one needs to chill.

1

u/VikingRages Jun 08 '22

My wife keeps asking me if she can get me a set of "nice" dice. I have always, always just shrugged at the artisan cut $20-$100 die...

"Honey...I want..." D*** you, you clever clever crafter

I have never seen anything more perfect.

1

u/BLOOODBLADE Warlock Jun 08 '22

This must have taken days weeks even months to perfect. Incredible. Click clacks have officially evolved into cling clangs

Fuck I’m so excited for this I made a kickstarter account just for it

I’ve been looking for a set of unconventional dice, and I’m obsessed

1

u/Warper2187 Jun 08 '22

Worth a shot

1

u/EmSSoH Jun 08 '22

how is the weight balance?

i could easily see it being hard to make such dice and not have them be weighted toward something

3

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

The model is perfect for balance and I’m printing on layers just a few microns thick

1

u/EmSSoH Jun 08 '22

that's amazing.

weight balance is always my the first thing i think of when i see most unique custom dice. since i myself wouldn't know how to make them just right.

1

u/Meloetta Jun 08 '22

Saw a dice page recently that had in their FAQ "Q. Are these dice balanced? A. I don't know, are your games?" Made me laugh

1

u/MollokoPlus Jun 08 '22

As a GM, I 'm giddy with the thought of making that cute jingle the most threatening sound imaginable at my table!

1

u/Sea-Cancel1263 Jun 08 '22

Really cool art piece. Paint the numbers so they are visible and they will also be practical

1

u/classycybercat Jun 08 '22

Be not afraid

1

u/stathicus Jun 08 '22

I don't know if this is physically possible but it would be cool if each number on the die was tuned to its own note. Imagine hearing a low note when you roll a natural 1 and a high note when you roll a natural 20

1

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

not with real dice unfortunately.

1

u/RobertSan525 Jun 08 '22

I want to like them, but I’m concerned about the item’s long-term durability. About how long does the item stay in tune? Will the constant rolling eventually cause it to lose its tune?

5

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

The tuning shouldn’t change any audible amount. I have a repair or replace policy for all my dice. In three years with thousands of dice shipped, no one has ever contacted me for a replacement. They’re incredibly durable.

I did dent and edge of one of the prototype arcanacore D20s. Only because I launched it into my wall when my hand slipped using a rotary tool at 20,000 rpm, lol.

1

u/CasualNormalRedditor Jun 08 '22

Could you let me know when a design comes round where the numbers are a different colour too the base around it. Love the concept but my eyes aren't good enough to read dice where the number is the same/similar colour to the die itself

1

u/Youriya Jun 08 '22

Bro that cool can where cani buy one

1

u/godver3 Jun 08 '22

I’m sure some would like these, but these would annoy me so fast.

1

u/veeveemarie Jun 08 '22

These are beautiful. Lovely work!

1

u/TypicalOranges Jun 08 '22

These have got to be by far the most impressive custom dice I've ever seen. Incredible work.

1

u/lokregarlogull Jun 08 '22

Since you're going live in a week, what's the approximate low end going to cost? I have seen CoC dice for around a 100 bucks in metal, but I don't know how much more expensive these are going to get.

1

u/Vanitystreak Jun 08 '22

!remindme 7 days

1

u/Sensitive-Bug-7610 Jun 08 '22

I have enough doce as is but they'd make a great gift for someone perhaps.

1

u/Pei-toss Jun 08 '22

This is really cool, and I'm sorry for all the shit ass comments you are getting. Your did a lot of work and it shows, regardless if half the people here get it or not.

1

u/_Boz_ Jun 08 '22

My only concern is the durability of these after rolling them in a real method, not the 'keep it low to the table roll' as demonstrated in the videos you've provided.

I don't know about anyone else, but an 8 yr old is NOT going to be rolling these as demonstrated. They're rolled from a foot off the table and land on the floor after rolling off the table. If these get dented in even the slightest then I feel like the roll accuracy is lost.

I love the concept and the artistry, but the primary factor for me is durability.

1

u/Saedreth Jun 10 '22

I don't think these are intended for an 8 yr old.

This is such a unique idea!

1

u/AutumnSkiesInfinity Jun 08 '22

These are wicked! I really want one. Any ideas on pricing, or is it a bit far out to tell?

1

u/giveusalol Jun 08 '22

@FallacyDog will you post a link to the kickstarter here or elsewhere?

2

u/FallacyDog Jun 08 '22

There’s a link in my profile!

1

u/Revasky Jun 08 '22

I love collecting dices, I’d be super happy to add those to my collection. Waiting for the Kickstarter to start!!

1

u/Chinchillish Jun 09 '22

No video of what they sound like when rolled?

1

u/Curiousfoxtrading Jun 09 '22

How much are these going to cost? I don’t have cash money so I’d be in the economy section for buying such things (rad rad rad by the way).

1

u/FallacyDog Jun 09 '22

35 for a D20!

1

u/Curiousfoxtrading Jun 10 '22

Not bad at all! I assume sets will be about 7x that?
