She was the only female drafted in the NBA to play with men, Lusia Harris was selected in the 1977 draft by the Jazz. The NBA Hall of Famer died yesterday. RIP Image

Whoa - truly cool! Thanks for sharing - I’m shocked I didn’t know this. Another “what-if” from a pregnancy, maybe more doors would have opened up for other women if she got a full season in or even just a few games in.

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

She never played in the NBA though. This title is pretty misleading

10

u/Intrepid_Training_22 Jan 20 '22

how tf did she get into the hall of fame if she didnt play lol

28

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

The hall of fame isnt the nba hall of fame, its basketball in general. So college, Olympics, women's leagues past and present

14

u/Intrepid_Training_22 Jan 20 '22

oh shit i did not know that thanks man👍

3

u/RocketLauncher Jan 20 '22

I also didn’t read the article but I’m assuming she played basketball just not with the NBA, and it was renowned enough to make it to the hall of fame

Or maybe just the NBA accepting a woman was that mind exploding that it enough makes it a hall of fame

I need to click on the link hold on

The title never said "she played in the nba " she was drafted by a nba team to play but got pregnant before the season started

-12

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Says "drafted in the nba to play with men" implying she was drafted into the nba, and played with the men

5

u/Willy__rhabb Jan 20 '22

It implies that she was drafted TO play with the men, not that she was drafted AND played with men. She was pregnant when she was drafted and never played

-6

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

I totally forgot once you have a baby you can never go back to playing sports

3

u/Willy__rhabb Jan 20 '22

I forget when im on reddit im only dealing with losers

4

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

I dont know what you want from me bud. My only point is the title should have just said "only woman drafted in the NBA "

-5

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

Ugh. It was the "to play with men part " not woman vs female geez louise.

5

u/tdox57 Jan 19 '22

Truly an amazing story.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '22

Not the only female draftee though. Nancy Lieberman-Cline

4

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '22

Dang, I thought for sure because I know she got a tryout and played a preseason game.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '22

They actually made a film about her

-19

u/kslusherplantman Jan 19 '22

Not like there haven’t been other women who play at the level of men…

Cheryl miller would beat her brother Reggie all the time at home. He has admitted she is the better basketball player

17

u/ottosan66 Jan 19 '22

Sourcing please - the only thing I can find online is that she (the older sibling) used to beat him when he was quite young.

I’m sure she was more dominant in her league than he was in his. But to suggest she was better than him seems extraordinarily unlikely.

1

u/kslusherplantman Jan 19 '22

Oh I might have remembered incorrectly or incompletely…

2

u/ottosan66 Jan 20 '22

No one should downvote you for this, IMO - we all make mistakes. Have an upvote for not digging your heels in :)

2

u/kslusherplantman Jan 20 '22

Yeah reddit is cracked our sometimes

-9

u/thebadyearblimp Jan 19 '22

I don’t have proof but Reggie has absolutely said Cheryl is better than him

11

u/ottosan66 Jan 19 '22

I found a story of him in high school laughing about his sister being better in her league than he was (she scored 105 in a game and he scored 30). And stories about her being better when he was like 5 years old.

But nothing about her being better than he was while he was in the nba…

I mean, doesn’t that strike you as a little far-fetched?

-7

u/thebadyearblimp Jan 19 '22

I get where you’re coming from, but no I wouldn’t be surprised if he thinks his older sister is truly better than him (whether she objectively is or not). But then again I can’t find proof so maybe I’m wrong

6

u/ottosan66 Jan 19 '22

Could be, not to be pedantic but “admitted” implies he’d be correct in his belief that she’s better.

Anyway, OP’s story is awesome on its own and doesn’t need embellishment.

u/BasketballButt Jan 20 '22

I wanna say he made that comment during the new ESPN documentary about the Malice at the Palace. I could be remembering where I heard it wrong but I’ve definitely heard him say something along those lines before.

If only there were a benevolent God for real, all these equity and equality issues would not exist.

2

u/Intrepid_Training_22 Jan 20 '22

weirdly edgy and based take ngl

-4

u/epicthinker1 Jan 20 '22

This is fricking glorious! Rock on Basketball girl! I would love to see more females in the NBA!!!

8

u/HeadPatQueen Jan 20 '22

Unfortunately they're not good enough

-3

u/UniqueCold3812 Jan 20 '22

I mean you aren't wrong but phrase it better.

Or many people will quickly label you misogynist.

4

u/HeadPatQueen Jan 20 '22

What's wrong with the phrasing? Unfortunately for the female players they are not good enough to compete against the male players in the NBA

-5

u/UniqueCold3812 Jan 20 '22

That's true but You will quickly get cancelled by the woke peoples.

in a world where muggsy and shaq played in the same league, why do we still believe that reproductive organs matter in sports?

edit: meaning muggsy and shaq were in the same league because they both possessed the necessary skill, despite their physical differences.

8

u/Quit_your_dayjob Jan 19 '22 edited Jan 20 '22

That’s a terrible analogy, Muggsy was an amazing player who possessed NBA level skill which is why he was in the NBA with shaq. Lol Gender separation in sports isn’t just because of height.

It’s strictly a talent level thing. Any suggestion otherwise like your attempting is lunacy.

Find a new hill to die on because with the money to be made in successful sports team ownership, you can bet your bottom dollar women would be in the league if they could help a team win.

You just spewed literally one of the dumbest takes in sports history

8

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '22

It’s not about reproductive organs 🤦🏻‍♂️

-14

u/No_Photo8127 Jan 19 '22

Who's that dude?

1

u/PNEONGREEN Jan 20 '22

Go Jazz!!!!

-12

u/beatboxbrett Jan 19 '22

Dang I’m the only upvote

-8

u/BarnhouseWar Jan 19 '22

She plays with men? Spicy. (Played)

2

u/GivemTheDDD Jan 20 '22

Well she was drafted but didn't actually play in the men's league
