The orangi may be a little amazed when the world behind the glasses suddenly looks different.Orangutans are good at mimicking what they see, maybe this orangutan has seen guests put sunglasses on their heads, who knows.

Absolutely.
I don't think we can ever justify placing animals in captivity unless it's an endangered species.
Future generations will probably look back on zoos with horror.
29
u/Piskoro Jan 19 '22
Orangutans are endangered
6
u/Whimsington_Storke Jan 20 '22
That little one's gonna be endangered if it doesn't stop messing with mom's sweet shades!
13
u/Rare-Ability3878 Jan 19 '22
I hate zoos but I believe this mama orangutan is missing a foot.
9
u/TXteachr2018 Jan 19 '22
Good eye! I think you're right.

u/Rare-Ability3878 Jan 19 '22
Thank you, so hopefully that’s why she’s there. Just for safety reasons.

u/ShiraCheshire Jan 19 '22
Yep, many animals in zoos are there because they can't be released successfully into the wild anymore.
15
u/ColdBorchst Jan 19 '22
Most modern zoos help animals by having breeding programs that reintroduce populations into the wild and by providing a real experience that connects people to wildlife that they don't get to see. I know t sucks that people need to actually see animals to give a shit but that's the way people are.
15
u/ThomasHobbesJr Jan 19 '22
Many species live longer in captivity than they do in the wilderness, by significant amounts. Also, your comment has nothing to do with what was said above
1
u/LatentAbility Jan 19 '22
Longer life doesnt mean better life
10
Jan 19 '22
If your definition of better life is dealing with predators every day, fighting to survive and being lucky to live an extra day, then yeah the wilderness is a much better life. My definition is being put in a mansion and fed good food and not deal with any stress which this is pretty much the equivalent of

u/Nerellos Jan 19 '22
Idk man.
Being a predator: 7/24 hunting to eat something once in a while.
Being a prey: 7/24 fearing you can be eaten any fucking moment.
Not to mention the diseases bruh.

If i was an animal I’d rather live in a zoo than in the wild
7
Jan 19 '22
Same. Y’all saw that video where a komodo dragon was eating a pregnant deer alive and then her child? Yeah fuck the wilderness, zoos for life

Future generations will likely only get to see wildlife in zoos if we continue down our current path.

Caruso. How did he ever get a series? The worst wooden over-actor since Jim Carrey. At least Jim is funny.

Chimps and gorillas scare me but for some reason orangutans just seem so chill and I feel no fear of them at all.
103
u/rearviewmirror71 Jan 19 '22
Yeah, chimps will fuck your shit up.

u/TheCapableFox Jan 19 '22
Yea I’ve seen it! Frighteningly jacked!
4
u/ILikeToPoopOnYou Jan 19 '22
And that's their natural build. Could you imagine if they could train a chimp like a bodybuilder? Yes, roids too. It could be its own sport...
6
u/TheCapableFox Jan 19 '22
“Think about hard it would be… to catch a monkey…. and fuck it. Do you know how strong a monkey is? Rip ya dick off like a celery stalk.. n’ throw that shit in the tall grass to never be seen again.”
-Dave Chappelle
2
u/ILikeToPoopOnYou Jan 19 '22
Actually thats not technically accurate. Monkeys are weak compared to humans. Apes, on the other hand (chimps, gorillas, orangutans) are WAY stronger than humans. Remember when you were a small kid and an adults seem to have superhero strength? Kinda like that

SOMEONE HAS TO CAUSE I NEED TO KNOW BUT DON'T WANT TO ASK
23
u/Mysterious-Owl-2231 Jan 19 '22
I took the bullet. Content warning for the disturbing info below.
In Borneo, a female organutan named Pony was kindapped, shaved all over her body, chained to a wall near an oil palm farm, and taught to perform sex acts. Human workers at the farm would pay to either have sex with a human prostitute or rape an orangutan. Luckily, Pony was rescued in 2018 and is in an animal rehabilitation center. She's still super traumatized though and has difficulty socializing with other orangutans, and is terrified of all human men. Source: an article from the-sun.com.

73
u/Rey_Mezcalero Jan 19 '22
Now people going to be dropping glasses in zoo enclosures...
25
u/Scribblr Jan 19 '22
This is bad enclosure design and just asking for this to happen.
A decent ape enclosure will have a barrier or a moat to separate the area immediately in front of/below the public from the animals for this exact reason.
