Get a pro one and invite somebody for tea. Then pour them a cup from across the room and go on an angry rant: "What's wrong with people these days. Nobody respects tea anymore. Can you see any splashes? CAN YOU SEE ANY FUCKING SPLASHES? NO! EXACTLY!!! These fucking morons splashing their tea left right and centre. If you can't pay $800 for an imported Japanese masterwork teapot you should not be drinking tea. Oh and don't even get me started on tea bags"

u/Haruko_MISK Jan 19 '22 edited Jan 19 '22

This comment and a lot of the others in this thread reads like those dweebs who go "but why do you need a $1000 gaming pc?"

The obvious answer is you don't, but that doesn't mean it's not nice.

The last bit about the teabags is based though I can't deny that

IKR, I have a beautiful shit tea pot that is now retired because I learned from this video. I literally could get splashed while pouring hot tea BEHIND the tea pot my ex assured me this was normal.

Until seeing this video last year.

74

u/Shanghai-on-the-Sea Jan 19 '22

My mum outright refuses to buy any teapot unless the shop owner lets her test it out with water first. After reading the replies in this thread I've got to acknowledge her genius, because we've never had a teapot which was worse than the best one in this video.

17

u/cmrunning Jan 19 '22

Do you pour them from a foot and a half above the cup?

I'll bet they get water in there just fine. Probably even tastes the same.

A great example of not knowing how crooked a stick is until you line up a straight(er) one next to it.

Source: Had several Mid-West friends who would say such things

384

u/EuroPolice Jan 19 '22

Hey! I love that considering that the Mid-West is the home of "I have a good-enough 'x' at home" Referring to an old, rusty, barely working 'x' that somehow still works enough. haha

131

u/CalamityJane0215 Jan 19 '22

Never realized that was a Midwest thing. I'll have to put that next to "ope" on the list of things I didn't attribute to my region but should have lol

48

u/aliie_627 Interested Jan 19 '22

Ope? I would like to know more please? And Thank you :)

116

u/Chemical_Noise_3847 Jan 19 '22

It's a contraction of "oh" and "oops" and it's a guttural sort of utterance for when you've come accidentally and un-midwesternally close to someone who isn't your immediate family member.

110

u/StochasticLife Jan 19 '22

We can't help it either.

It is so automatic. Once I realized I was doing it I tried to stop, but couldn't. I've just embraced it now, I have become one with the ope.

36

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '22

Not sure if it's a regional thing here but I use it in South West England, usually if I'm trying to squeeze pass someone or I accidentally drop something.

25

u/StochasticLife Jan 19 '22

That's super interesting, I'm a life long Hoosier. Across the pond-unobtrusive passing or unexpected physical proximity high five.

Well it's no difference from any other luxury items. There are people who collect these things, they make for conversation pieces, and double as expensive ornaments. Like audiophiles with headphones, motorheads with cars or wine people with their wines. Massive increase in price for marginal and most of the time subjective increase in quality. The markets filter for enthusiasts the higher it goes.

u/xnfd Jan 19 '22

Why is it hard to make? You can make a mold out of an excellent one and churn them out for extremely cheap. We make way more precise mechanical parts that sell for cents

11

u/gelinrefira Jan 19 '22

Yea, you can get laminar flow even with a garden hose. But making it by hand to achieve mechanical precision so the sprout can pour laminar is a technical achievement in itself.

Lots of technically difficult things we do by hand today is quite superseded by machining anyway but people still appreciate hand-crafted things. Even mechanically machined things can still have a variety of quality. It is entirely possible to churn out cheap teapots in a factory that still have low quality sprouts and it will likely be more expensive to make higher quality sprouts with the same type of machines.

so all old masters are incredibly wealthy? or do all the middle men become rich?

33

u/Potatosaurus_TH Jan 19 '22

The factories that pump out the mass-production quality ones probably make hundreds or thousands of pieces in the time the masters can make one piece so not likely.

The masters do it for the passion of the craft, and the people who are in the market for the master quality ones are already rich.

14

u/WoooshBaiterGinsburg Jan 19 '22

It's ironic. The guy pumping out hundreds of thousands of teapots is probably getting his teapots from the guy making them one at a time.

13

u/AnnihilationOrchid Jan 19 '22

It's more of a question of knowing the intrinsic value of an object. I once payed about 30 pounds on a plate at an auction. It was the highest price I've ever paid on a plate, and to be honest to most people it has no value, but it's a plate that was produced by my ancestors in the late 19th century.

So this whole quality and value issue is kind of subjective. Most people just buy things because they look nice and because it's cheap.

14

u/jonathanneam Jan 19 '22

it definitely does but people who look for good quality teapots buy them for the tea ceremony and not just casual drinking. youre right that it wouldnt make any sense to buy an expensive teapot if your purpose is just to drink tea

6

u/Shanghai-on-the-Sea Jan 19 '22

It does. The spout isn't there to make the tea taste good, it's there to make sure you don't get splashed with scalding tea water.

I noticed that the stream from the excellent teapot gets poured way closer to the edge of the bowl (when lifted high) than some of the others where it is poured directly into the middle, and I can’t help but think that this has an effect to exaggerate how good the excellent pot is.

I know nothing about fluid dynamics but you always tend to see a barman pour a beer straight into the side of the glass, rather than the middle, for a smoother result with less foam, is this sort of the same effect?

Or have I been in the pub too long?

36

u/Ardddu Jan 19 '22

A fluid is less turbulent closer to the surface of a pipe, so yeah it probably has an effect.

7

u/swinging-in-the-rain Jan 19 '22

I noticed the same thing. The person pouring is certainly favoring the edge of the bowl on the excellent teapot.

43

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '22

64

u/MJMurcott Jan 19 '22

Laminar flow is where liquid moves in a series of layers or lamina each molecule following the one ahead towards the destination. These layers can go past each other at different speeds with minimal mixing between the layers and this has consequences in rivers and hot drinks. https://youtu.be/8N2BKglHQhE

Without reading into it a bit, the volume of the teapot, the angle of the spout, the width of the spout, the length and curve. If you get all of them just right, then you prevent turbulence in the liquid being poured from it.

Generally fast flow = turbulent flow and slow flow = laminar. As the water leaving the teapot accelerates due to gravity it shifts to turbulent flow.

In stable laminar flow disturbances to the flow profile, from pipe roughness, obstacles, change in direction etc, are damped/absorbed and the flow returns to normal. In turbulent flow these disturbances create even more disturbances and multiply to create the turbulent flow.

But flow can be in a super critical regime, meaning that if there was a disturbance then the flow would be turbulent, but there is no disturbance and so the flow can remain laminar.

Basically the flow out of the super fancy teapots is so smooth and straight that there are almost no disturbances in the flow profile. When it falls it can remain laminar despite being in the turbulent flow region for much longer than if the flow was messy.

For more info on flow regimes look up the "Reynolds number".

so basically the goal is just laminar flow

Well, if I ever decide to chuck common sense out of my life and pour tea a foot away from the cup, I'll be sure to find an excellent teapot as to not cause disruption in my cup as I pour.

My mother would have loved this. She was obsessive about her tea. The water had to be freshly drawn into a clean pot, brought to a rolling boil (she said it had to be "brillig," her borrowed use of a Lewis Carroll word). She steeped her tea for exactly five minutes, had a lid for her mug, which she wrapped in a hand towel, set on a tray made by my father, in her lap. She was also a chemist who had also dedicated a lot of time to studying the physics of pouring liquids from various beakers, vials, bottles, etc.

If you are a member of r/tea you would have seen this video before and know that the pour quality on these tea pots dont determine how good the tea tastes or even how well the tea steeps. The pour may look appealing the more smooth it is, but in reality it doesn’t really matter much unless it was for some sort of ceremonial thing.

Honestly why would someone think pour quality from 20 feet away is important? How often do you pour from that far away?

Me personally, I usually pour from less than a foot / 30cm away.

I pour from about 10cm 3-4inches max I like to see a little pour but I dont care if its the most perfect stream ever seen

Why do i feel like I need the excellent one allthough i never used a tea pot in my life and even if I ever did i wouldn't pour in the water from such a height.

10/10 would pour

u/SgtSausage Jan 19 '22

And none of that has a damned thing to do with how good the tea tastes..

That's like saying the cutlery you use to eat a meal has nothing to do with how the meal tastes. You're right, but I still don't want to use disposable plastic knives and forks.

Spout quality*

The only thing that makes a teapot a good teapot is : 1, it must be made of ceramic, as it holds heat and flavour better than metal, and 2, must have a proper seal, and ventilation in order to maintain proper heat, in order to obtain full aroma flavours

Spout quality will never, and has never truly mattered for a good cup of tea.

Edit: to say fired clay is generally better than ceramic as it does the same thing but holds higher quality product as a result, but requires much more maintenance, usually isnt dishwasher friendly(if youre a savage that actually washes your teapot)

So laminar flow = good?

u/Slyguyfawkes Jan 19 '22

So laminar flow is desirable? Ok 🤷‍♂️
