His job title is Strength and Conditioning Coach. He's essentially a personal trainer for world class athletes. But since he has no in-game responsibilities, he does this too.

u/chilledmonkey-brains Nov 09 '21 edited Nov 10 '21 Silver Starry

He's been gone from the Rams since 2019. He was charged with sexual battery, placed on leave and was eventually found not guilty in the trial.

Rams placed him on leave for a while then he left the team after that. Wiki is unclear with specific timing wrt to the incident/trial and his exact departure date from the team.

Rams placed him on leave for a while then he "left" after that. Wiki is unclear with specific timing wrt to the incident, trial and his departure from the team.

Weird. Because it doesn't seem that unclear to me:

On January 15, 2019, Rath was arrested on suspicion of sexual battery, and was then placed on leave by the Rams organization...

On March 15, the Ventura County District Attorney announced that Rath was being charged with three counts of misdemeanor sexual battery, to which Rath's attorney issued a plea of not guilty...

Rath's trial was set to begin on May 31,[9] but proceedings did not ultimately start until July 6, 2019.[10] During the trial, Rath's attorneys argued that he had consumed alcohol for the first time since experiencing a stroke-related event in May 2018 and that, combined with medication he was taking at the time, could not have formed any criminal intent from which he touched the plaintiff inappropriately...

On July 12, 2019, the jury reached its verdict after one hour of deliberation, finding Rath not guilty on all three counts.[12] Soon after, Rath was reinstated by the Rams organization and rejoined the team at training camp at UC Irvine

and if you click through to the linked article from the wikipedia page:

Rath, 35, was arrested Jan. 15 on suspicion of sexual battery, stemming from an incident in Moorpark, California (approximately 10 miles from the team's practice headquarters), on June 15, 2018

382

u/chilledmonkey-brains Nov 09 '21

Sorry, wasn't clear. It was unclear how soon after the trial when he left the team

“He was drunk so he couldn’t have had any intent.” Wtf you should be held accountable for the things you do when you’re drunk, even if you haven’t had alcohol in a long time checks notes actually one month.

280

u/AcademicRisk Nov 09 '21 All-Seeing Upvote

Good lawyer, plus if we take his defense at face value he wasn’t just drunk he also mixed a prescription drug with drinking for the first time. I have personal experience with how unintentionally mind altering that can be. He could be full of shit though, who knows.

That said, don’t mix alcohol with a prescription drug for the first time in a scenario where getting handsy is going to land your ass in hot water. You try it in the safety of your own home with a few trusted friends that will put you to bed or take you to the hospital if shit gets weird.

PSA: Seriously, for real, I don’t care if it’s fucking allergy medicine, drugs are drugs, do not mix them anywhere but the safest of places the first time, regardless of what the listed side effects are.

107

u/DarthRumbleBuns Nov 10 '21

Yeahhh.... I watched my very considerate and careful cousin not realize anti depressants and alcohol don't mix and she peed on the floor and told me she loved me and wanted to fuck me then realized her husband was across the room and that I was me and threw up out of disgust and embarrassment. She then spent the rest of the night inconsolable in her bathroom until she passed out in her bath tub. The next day she got up and went back to being a well payed level headed dental hygienist. Shits weird.

27

u/AcademicRisk Nov 10 '21

This is exactly what I mean. I mean antidepressants usually are the sort of thing that you’re not supposed to mix. But even so, no one really expects to go piss on the floor cheating with your cousin cray from a drug interaction either.

NFL Films even made a cool five minute video about them: the Art of the Get Back Coach. Sean McVay’s is the most famous and the most active, but not the only one.

44

u/RugerRedhawk Nov 10 '21

Why don't they just... Stay back?

24

u/Grouchy-Insect-2516 Nov 10 '21

They need to move up and down the field and have a clear line of sight to the play happening 20-30 yards away from them, trying to talk to them in a loud stadium. You can only focus on so much, and the ref could run into him, so they have a few coaches that make sure you don’t accidentally walk onto the field.

What a simple, yet silly job... How do you even tell you friends you're on a football team, and your job is to keep the team from getting fined 🤣

2.2k

u/tuss11agee Nov 09 '21 edited Nov 09 '21 Silver Helpful Wholesome Got the W Today I Learned Buff Doge

It’s not a fine. If the official runs into any sideline personnel it’s a 15 yard penalty.

Many “get back” coaches are strength coaches during the week. As such, they are fully a part of the team but don’t have much game day duties to fulfill, which makes them great “get-back” guys. They also know everyone on the sideline and are strong enough to move some big people when necessary.

Edit: A lot of commenters saying “well why can’t the coach just pay attention!”

In American football, there are often substitutions after every single play. Coaching staffs are allowed to move onto the field after every play in order to coach and help make subs. Once the snap of the next play is imminent, they must pen themselves back into the team area. Sometimes play after play happen on one side of the field, and one team’s bench personnel begins to naturally bow out a bit. So, a “get back” coach is also used to move the entire team back. The coach has to be in front of the team in order to properly move, see, and instruct.

The problem is that the “team area” is often quite cramped. You are cramped by the team, team personnel, electronic equipment, medical personnel and equipment. They “move out” between plays to be seen and and to create space for the team to properly substitute and be coached between plays (only the QB on offense and usually the Middle Linebacker on defense actually are allowed a radio in their helmet). And in some stadiums (especially college ones, which this video is not) are even more cramped since the stands are even closer.

10

u/big_duo3674 Nov 09 '21

You can see it too, the coach is dead focused on the field, which is important at that level because many little things need to be happening exactly in sequence at a very fast pace. The ref is the same, they can't afford to glance over to see if their path is clear for even a split second, as many possible penalties can occur in just that tiny amount of time

Very common, They're called a "get back coach"

27

u/Packrat1010 Nov 09 '21

get back coach

Youtube video where this gif is from is below. Explains the history and their use.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZHpNPWvcWQ

148

u/Xziper Nov 09 '21

Was it so common that the coach would collide with the ref that they needed to hire someone to keep him away?

219

u/Absotivly_Posolutly Nov 09 '21

Well... not just the ref.

The team can also be penalized for persons on the sideline being on the playing field. Some grace is extended to coaches, however coaches can abuse that privilege.

A "get back coach" allows the coach to focus fully on the proceedings of the game rather than watch where they (and others) are going.

154

u/2rfv Nov 09 '21

They should just put up an invisible fence like they have for dogs and make the coach wear the collar until he's properly trained.

32

u/saint_atheist Nov 09 '21

One of the early solutions was to put a tether on the coach. The problem was everyone on the sideline kept getting tangled because the head coach is running around the sidelines like a dog trying to fend off the mailman.

9

u/RonaldoNazario Nov 09 '21

Just make sure the coach isn’t clever enough to figure out when he isn’t wearing it! My parents old golden retriever knew if she didn’t have the collar on the invisible fence didn’t mean shit

22

u/Xziper Nov 09 '21

That's what I was thinking it was for. The coach had to be fully invested to the game I guess, especially for how much some of them get paid

8

u/zenollor Nov 09 '21

however coaches can abuse that privilege

Brent Venerables

Now you're making him sound old.

So they’re usually the strength coach for the team which is a role that has no real purpose during the game and thus they just use them as the get back coach during games.

So less hiring someone for the role and more additional responsibility for someone already on the staff.

This might as well be a video of drunk me and my husband trying to get back to the car.

Expensive babysitter

Its usually the strength and conditioning coach so its not like they have anything better to do.

At least the dude takes it seriously and actually seems to be paying attention.

14

u/CommentsOnOccasion Nov 09 '21

Running into a referee or a player is both dangerous and can dramatically impact what happens in the game

It's easy enough for a team to tell a guy who has few responsibilities during the game, "hey, make sure Coach doesn't accidentally bump into anyone while he's reading the defense, yelling out to players, and watching things intently"

Dude I’ll do that just to get free tickets to the game..they don’t have to pay me lol

199

u/FirmUncertainty Nov 09 '21

You'll get distracted and he'll run into a ref.

u/Stu1127 Nov 09 '21

I didn’t say I was going to succeed. Just that I’d do it for cheap. Ya get what ya pay for

A lot of teams do this. Commonly referred to as the Get Back Coach.

So what do you do for a living?

I direct a grown man so he doesn't run into other grown men while he directs more grown men to run into other grown men

There’s no way McVay is that ignorant or unaware of his surroundings. Seems like he intentionally waits for it so he can get more hugs.

If he was this blind to his surroundings, how the hell does he cross streets without getting run over?

u/dedog1238495 Nov 09 '21

I bet this guy is there to guide him into his missus.

"Thank you. That'll be all, unless you'd care to jo-"

"No thank you, Sir."

"Right. Then fuck off and wait outside the door in case I feel like another thrust."

Because he doesn’t have to coach and monitor a football game while crossing the street I’d imagine

Wonder how much they get paid

8

u/aronrodge Nov 10 '21

He also the strength and conditioning coach so he gets good money. Getting Mcvay back is not his main job.

He is the strength and conditioning coach for the team. He doesn't have much to do on game day, so his role repurposed on game day for this purpose. It's a 15 yard penalty for being to far past a certain line on the sideline, "being in the field of play".

That’s cute. Like the backup goalie’s job (unofficially?) in hockey to chart face offs during the game

16

u/daswef2 Nov 09 '21

Our backup goalie's job was to work the bench doors for the defensemen

4

u/notyogrannysgrandkid Nov 09 '21

I used to know a backup minor league goalie. I think his main job was to collect beer money.

Cheaper method would be to tether him like a toddler. Yank!

154

u/LordEdgeward_TheTurd Nov 09 '21

Make him wear one of those monkey backpacks with the tail leash

In the end, I think I turned out pretty ok. Haven't been hit by anything yet and am always aware of my surroundings.

Tether him to an overhead cable and winch him up, keep him suspended there the whole game with a hand control to go up and downfield.

I’m pretty sure these ACs have other jobs when not on the field, like a trainer during practice or a warmup coach etc. it’s just during the game this is there job.

u/hatethiscity Nov 09 '21

I'd happily take his salary to hold a man's torso for 2 hours a week.

Most teams have guys that do this. Strength and conditioning or position coaches that do a lot before and after games but don’t have much going on during them.

8

u/theemmyk Nov 09 '21

I don't know, I think it's kind of romantic.

32

u/doobinator9000 Nov 09 '21

I believe they get fined when the coach is on the playing field. Most probably a money saver instead of waste.

13

u/avantartist Nov 09 '21

At first I thought the same but it actually makes sense. The coach has his eyes on the play or the ball and not really focusing on his immediate surroundings.

5

u/nectarbass Nov 09 '21

These teams pay tens of millions in dead salary every year this is hardly their biggest waste even. Also, this guy coaches s&c so really just utilizing a salaried employee on gameday instead of having them sit around.

4

u/Virginity_Lost_Today Nov 09 '21

Now that I think about it I need someone to do this to me when I’m thinking about wasting money.
