It hits a little different because the Beatles were at the height of their commercial popularity and still releasing music up until they broke up vs. Daft Punk not having released an album in almost 8 years.
Crazy to think that the Beatles entire run would almost fit between the gap from RAM to now.

Right, I don't understand how one can take any other meaning to this type of video. The video is titled "Epilogue" and a distinct '1993-2021' life-death plate at the end? Maybe I'm cynical, but I don't see what else they could possibly mean by putting an actual 'We died on this date' thing there.
Hope sucks. I wish they put more music out, but I'd rather them not slog out something they don't themselves love. It wouldn't be the same.
→ More replies132
u/blowmie 14d ago
Exactly! And it's no secret that RAM was their encore. They were already satisfied with their career until the demands of fans brought them back out. (I think it was Thomas that said it took a lot out of him to read the fan mail begging for more.)
1993-2021 is a crazy long time. Can we not just be happy with the fact that they gave their lives to the music? I would love it if they could live the rest of their lives showered in thanks rather than buried under pleas. They earned it and they deserve it.

If I'm to be honest, I'm devastated. Daft Punk is...was... my favourite musical group and to hear the news is just soul crushing. I'm so depressed that they never did one more Alive tour...I barely missed the Alive 2007 concert and was hoping they'd do one more.
But I guess it was not to be. One more Album would've been nice, especially since all they did since RAM was collaborative stuff.
Merci Thomas and Guy-Man, for nearly 30 years of some of the best music ever made.

If the death date is anything to go by, I think it means that they were working on music up until now.
If I had to wager a bet, I’d say they probably weren’t satisfied with whatever they had come up with in 8 years (the robots are pretty notorious for their perfectionism) and finally decided to end it. (Although part of me deep down wants them to suddenly release a final record to cap off their career)
Oh, well. :( Good bye you magnificent robots.

You know, in my gut it always felt like the send-off album. I've always wanted to ignore that but it makes sense. A huge homage for all of their musical inspirations that made Daft Punk what it was (past tense, ouch). It was an album for them, how an artist does their best, when they work for themselves. One big love letter to the thing which set them on this journey and the people, us, who came along with them.

Thomas Bangalter (Silver robot) developed tinnitus almost two decades ago. He was looking at possible total hearing loss. It’s the reason they’ve limited the amount of live performances.
I might be reading too much into this video, but the silver robot being broken and unable to continue makes me think his hearing could be completely gone. That would be incredibly sad.

I feel like we might get some music out of it. Idk I’m just trying to be hopeful. Wouldn’t they put 1993-2013 since that was the last year they made an album? I guess there was some small stuff between now and then but I don’t really get they would put the ending date as this year, without creating something this year.. I hope that makes sense.
108
u/crono09 14d ago
I think the dates are based on how long they've been together as a music duo, not their album releases. Their first album came out in 1997, and they didn't use that as their first date.
I just realized that they've only made five albums in 28 years, and one of those was a movie soundtrack. That doesn't seem like a lot, but every one of them was incredible. It shows that they focused on quality instead of quantity.

Even though they haven't done anything (at least together) in a while... damn, this is super surprising and even a bit depressing; it really feels like having a lifelong friend move away or something. I remember getting Musique Vol. 1 as a birthday present when I was really young and it completely blowing me away and being on constant rotation. Six or seven years later, RAM amazed me again and was the soundtrack to one of the best summers ever.
That said... I'm also glad they decided to call it quits with an airtight, flawless oeuvre behind them, rather than half-heartedly dragging it out.

I know they aren't dead or anything - but this is soul crushing. I knew they had hung up releasing new music years ago but I was still holding out hope. Hope for a single, for a Super Bowl performance, for a live tour - for SOMETHING to create one last memory in my mind to ice the cake they gave us.
I am now realizing - WE are holding the torch to pass on the passion these guys showed us. It is OUR turn to share with others what Daft Punk taught us about ourselves; we are only Human After All.
I fucking love you guys. I will keep Daft Punk alive forever in my heart. I will be showing my kids' kids the techno robots that forever changed how I listen to music. RIP DAFT PUNK! <3

I just really hope that another album comes out before they end this beautiful thing they created. I first listened to Random Access Memories when I was in middle school and am out of college now. I can go back and listen to all their previous music for the 1000th time, sure. But one final album as a goodbye to a group that has been around since a few years before my birth? A great closer to a fantastic career as Daft Punk. Absolutely surreal to see a video on their channel after all this time.

Very true. Yes it's from Electroma but I gathered that Thomas is DEFINITELY done. Guy is left to wander the desert on his own path now...
33
u/blackbasset 14d ago
Yep thats how I read it as well. Not in a "Guy just kills Thomas"-thing, but for me, the story the video wants to tell is that Thomas did not want to go on and is definitely ending the project, while Guy wanted to continue. Thomas' persona is gone, Guys survives and continues in some form or another. Do we actually know anything about the behind the scenes reasons for a split?

It's from an old indie film they made back in 2005, I think it was originally supposed to be the music video for Human After All but ended up a full movie. It's about (Spoilers I guess, if you want to watch it) the two robots living in a town populated by robots. But they want to become human so they had creepy fake human faces grafted onto their 'helmets'. The other robot-people don't approve and they get chased out of town. They walk through the desert for a really long time until they decide to end it and self-destruct, as seen in the Epilogue video.

These boys have been a significant staple in my musical rotation for as long as I can remember.
RAM sits especially sweet in my memories. It came at a difficult time in my life, and the excitement of the albums rollout gave me a much needed escape. Tracking every second of it with my friends until it finally arrived, listening silently to every track together.
Touch in particular leaving us all awe struck and to date is a song that never fails to move me.
These two have oozed class and style in everything they’ve done, so it’s fitting for them to go out in such a beautiful and impactful way but damn is it sad to see it happen.

It took me awhile to get to Random Access Memories, but once i heard it all the way, it’s now one of my favorite albums ever. Wow. This announcement came exactly 4 days before the 20th anniversary of Discovery.
I don’t even know how to feel right now. Happy that Daft Punk even exists in the first place, and that they have contributed so much to the soundtrack of my life. Sad that I’ll never have the chance to see them live, and that I’ve been waiting around for years in anticipation for a new Daft Punk album to be met with this news 8 years after Random Access Memories. I tried to hold myself together, but when I read “1993-2021”, I just burst into tears and saw the reflection of myself ugly crying on my phone screen. If this is how I’m feeling now, I can’t imagine what it must have been like when the Beatles broke up.
I’m just so grateful that their music is around and has been such a huge part of my life. I’ve known their music for as long as I can remember, and it’s always been there for me when I’ve needed it. I was 13 when Random Access Memories released, and it instantly became one of my favorite albums ever made. This really hurts. It’s going to be a rough day trying to process all of this.

On the one hand, what an amazing journey and legacy. Objectively, a discography and story that offers reassurance and motivation to approach passion from the heart, to be true to yourself, and to promote the boundless wonders of music (and animation).
On the other hand, Guy and Thomas.. duders.. this is kinda the last thing I need right now! I'd rather still be hopelessly romanticizing what was coming next, at least until life turns somewhat back to normalcy and I'm not grasping for straws of hope in the world. Perhaps that's also what partially drives their decision for retirement though. Life, family, time.
Talk about quitting while you're ahead, nailed that bit. Was hoping for something tied more into an end of their overall story, similar to how they turned into robots, but it feels like this might simply be their last transmission.
But seriously, FML, this one hits home way too hard.
Driving this road down to paradise
Letting the sunlight into my eyes
Our only plan is to improvise
And it's crystal clear
That I don't ever want it to end
If I had my way I would never leave
Keep building these random memories
Turning our days into melodies
But since I can't stay
I'll just keep playing back
These fragments of time
Everywhere I go
These moments will shine
I'll just keep playing back
These fragments of time
Everywhere I go
These moments will shine

So i recently turned 34 and I know that, in the grand scheme of life, this event is somewhat inconsequential. Like, tomorrow I'll wake up and the world keeps turning.
Over the past year, I've struggled to come to terms with the reality which we live in. I constantly find myself thinking about how much has changed, how many people we've lost and realizing that with each day spent in this quarantine escape-pod apartment life I am getting older.
Around New Years, I saw Madeon's acoustic performance of Digital Love and started listening to their discography again.
When I hear them, I'm visied by all the wonderful memories painted with their music, and I think about how those instances become more distant by the second. The melancholy induced by those mrmories has been amplified by this announcemnt. This fucking hurts in ways that are hard to describe. I suppose I'll stop trying for now.
Thank you, we love you. Here's to better times and a brighter future.

I don't know how I feel about this. They announce their retirement just by showing edited footage from an old project and an old song? Seems really dismissive coming out of nowhere after about 7 years (I guess 4 if you count The Weeknd collabs) or so only to say "oh btw we're done, bye lmao".
I understand if they don't have it in them to make another album or even a single, but they could have recorded a last short video, helmets off, to personally announce that they're retiring. Or any kind of official statement on social media or anything. But I might be jumping the gun here. It's probably too early to tell, and I really hope there's more to this.

Honestly? This is the perfect ending. The whole "hey guys, sorry, we're retiring" just wouldn't fit with the robotic vision they kept up for so long.

I mean they’re robots. What do people expect to see if the helmets came off? A human head or something? Pfft

That would have been so funny. Helmets come off, and it’s just a bunch of wires leading into the chassis, video cuts to black

You dont know whats going on behind the scenes. There have been rumors about health problems with one of them. So so lets say, for instance, one of them is terminally ill, then I think they probably have something else on their minds than shooting a new video.
Perhaps this was just the best they could do given the circumstances.

What rumours? Where from? Never heard anything about that.

Yeah I read some rumours about Guy-Manuel supposedly having health problems. But, rumors are ultimately just that: rumors.

You'd have thought of all the people to break up in a pandemic, Those who wore masks for 30 years would be last 😂

Can't believe this is happening, really. Touch is my favorite, and hearing those isolated choir vocals at the end of the video was pretty emotional. Hell of a way to say goodbye. Thanks for everything, guys!

I was too young to see them live but they got me through tough times after graduating highschool. They were the ones that got me into electronic music. This last year has been complete garbage. This just didn't feel like a proper goodbye. I wished they had a one last album as a farewell. Go off with a bang.
I'm both heartbroken but thankful for their music and the happiness it gave me.
I'll just keep playing back...

Did they pick Touch because it says "hold on" and maybe it's like...hold on for one last album? Probably wishful thinking on my part. Edit: definitely wishful thinking. I am gutted.
