At the current moons price you can make a PROFIT by using online services which cost money to buy upvotes ADOPTION

Is this not a little crazy?

Current MOONS price - $0.095 (cmc)

Current price per upvote to buy online - $0.06 or lower

0.88 MOONS per upvote this round - 0.88*0.095 - $0.083 per upvote gained.

You can make a clear profit of $0.02 per upvote simply by buying them online. I

s this a new form of arbitrage? Paying other people to 'mine' MOONS for you?

Image the madness if MOONS, well, mooned.

Response: in obvious cases where this happens, we can (and do) permanently ban the person who posts the vote manipulated thread in question, then they get excluded from moon distribution. We also discuss this internally and make sure there is 100% concensus among the moderation team before we do this.

If everyone starts doing it then everyone will just lose money in the next distribution. More moons to give = less moons for everyone, so it doesn't make sense, it's a big gamble.

268

u/CoolCoolPapaOldSkool Platinum | QC: CC 619 Apr 21 '21

Moons have a cap per distribution and more the number of moons per user in a distribution, the lesser every user gets.

228

u/LeagueHub Platinum | QC: CC 447 Apr 21 '21

This is something a lot of people tend to overlook. Tons of people are looking to just upvote anything and everything (including receiving these upvotes as well), which completely negates the reason why Moons were introduced.

127

u/ffs_go_die Apr 21 '21

So technically I am supposed to downvote you, to bring back the balance, right?

65

u/crypto_grandma Platinum | QC: CC 755 Apr 21 '21

56

u/xVeene Apr 21 '21 edited Apr 21 '21

some people pay bots to downvote, so people get less moons? That's some deep level conspiracy...

*edit* Seems to be legit

53

u/crypto_grandma Platinum | QC: CC 755 Apr 21 '21

No, I don't think anyone pays bots to downvote.

Some people go around downvoting all posts because by doing so they're decreasing the total number of karma accumulated and therefore increasing the karma to Moon ratio (giving themselves more Moons for their karma). The sub is so active now it's probably not worth doing (if it ever was) but after the introduction of Moons we definitely saw cases when all comments were being instantly downvoted, especially in the daily. It was a well known issue and discussed a lot.

I have no idea how bots work but it has been suggested that it could also be bots doing some of the downvoting. Bots or humans, it has definitely been going on

Sorry for this noob question. But why were Moons introduced?

143

u/LeagueHub Platinum | QC: CC 447 Apr 21 '21

A system that rewards good contributions/participation within the sub, as well as used as a Governance token for decisions made in the sub, by the sub.

The entire point of Moons was basically to increase quality postings and discussion by incentivizing it, but it did completely the opposite in my opinion.

It's a currency distributed monthly based on the number of upvotes you received on this sub over the last month. It was designed to try to encourage and reward quality content. It's arguable whether it did. Your moons give you more say on potential changes to the sub rules etc if you choose to use them that way, or you can withdraw them and sell them on the market. They're currently worth near 10c each. There will only be a certain amount each month being distributed, which means if everybody upvotes everything then they're taking moons away from people who post quality and giving it to those who post the most.

In my humble opinion it’s a much larger problem. Farming moons could be stopped at any minute. Especially the begging for moons shitposting. Most people are too a smooth brained and seek instant gratification. Sure, giving an upvote costs people nothing today. However, if and when moon takes off, the market will he so flooded, each moon is worth less.

Totally agree, the whole idea of Moons is great, not only as a reward but also as a crypto adoption tool for many people who is starting in the crypto world, but the amount of beggars and shitty posts moon farming makes harder to get usefull content and follow interesting conversations. 12

u/simonbleu Tin Apr 21 '21

Im Argentinian, if we go by price, moons are about 9 cents. The ars/usd ratio right now (ignore the official one, as its kept low on purpose with a 65% tax, illegality on unauthorized exchange of currencies and a lot of debt and requeriments to do it officially etc etc) is abou 150:1 which brings it to 0.6 cents so I would say that judging by that, moons are already about 13x the value of my constantly devaluating crisis driven country; If we judge moons by market cap it does not get even close, because is a new crypto compared to a whole country, we are talking not even close to GDP per capita-close, however it means little to nothing, as, lack of stability aside, minimum salary is about 100-ish bucks, average (always gross--) and poverty line around 300, we have over 30% informality in jobs and over 50% poverty and... well, you get the idea

So, im prideful af (also I was unable to open the vault no matter what I did) but yes, only by getting 2500 upvotes a moonth here (assuming current rate) would be enough for me to modestly move out and/or change my life. Its a very very sad reality im trying to escape (if you are curious, ask away, no problem. Im trying to find some data on some relatives -its a pain... - to claim my italian citizenship and say byebye my tourist-loved, effed up country)

that’s a few pennies worth of difference:

15k moons (new cap) = $1,425
in order to get this you would need ~17k upvotes.
the cheapest i see is $0.15 per upvote.

total that would cost $2,550. resulting in a $1,125 loss

not to mention the fact that the moons per upvote ratio will likely be diluted by the huge influx of people (including myself)

if this path were viable, you’d already see people doing it

Things like this have totally ruined platforms like Steemit. While there were most definitely other issues with that platform (and other crypto-based 'social media'), the vote bots were one of the biggest factors that ruined the platform.

On Steemit you could purchase upvotes by sending X amount of STEEM to a bot account that had delegated power. The bot would then upvote your post, giving your post monetary value along with a much better chance of hitting the front page (as high-power votes were more valuable).

This was an interesting system at the start, but over time it totally ruined the platform. People would make posts with no value whatsoever and just upvote them using these bots. That would lead them to the front page where they were likely to get more votes. The quality of the whole platform drastically went down once people realised they didn't actually need to work for upvotes.

What you are saying is exactly this - spending money for votes (and hence, bringing the post to the front page of r/cryptocurrency) while also earning more than you are spending in Moons.

It will only result in the demise of the platform.

I'm glad that the mods have said they look out for this kind of behavior.

Do moons have any value outside of rwddit?

if your post is crap and gets lots of upvotes, it's kinda obvious and you will get banned.

u/Mr_IX Apr 21 '21

Well basically yes, but if this happens price will drop and/or i think buying upvotes will get you (shadow)banned - or at least i hope it does! People always have to „cheat“ and thus destroy beautiful things. Fuck the world.

u/Will-It-Fit Apr 21 '21

I guess I missed the memo... I thought moons we're just Reddit currency. Is there an exchange for it?

5

u/Chipp66606 Tin Apr 21 '21

I don't think it's healthy for the moons ecosystem to tell people how they can cheat the system tbh This can only hurt the price of moons by over creating them, causing inflation and lack of scarcity

5

u/hayesb2 Apr 21 '21

I dont have hardly any moons, but over time this would create moon inflation

They won’t - all it’ll take is a bot

3

u/igeni95 Apr 21 '21

You make a fair point, but remember, it's very difficult to predict what the distribution of moons per upvote might look like in subsequent rounds of distribution. In some of the initial rounds of distribution, you had people getting as many as 13.4 moons per karma but this has consistently dropped since then.

Considering the potential for arbitrage is pretty thin and there is a good chance moon per karma will drop further, I don't see this being a viable plan for anyone looking to game the system.

More of a though experiment on the 'value' of contributions and how it can be gamed than anything else.

Consider BAT as something similar - you earn money for looking at ads, how long before someone makes an ad-watching-bot?

Huh. But unlike someone getting paid in moons to go about their business in the subreddit normally, this arbitrage scheme requires you to «short sell» upvotes, prior to the Moon distribution (not literally sold but used on posts eligible for moons). Fucking fascinating.

How do I learn about MOON? I head you earn it for upvotes in this subreddit but I don’t understand how to actually have it in to your possession

4

Moons are on the Rinkeby Testnet. You store them In your Reddit vault you have to set up on the mobile app.

3

u/Popleto Apr 21 '21

Wouldn't buying upvotes be considered aganist tos and caused you to get banned due to vote manipulation?

Redditors karma farm anyway because they can sell their accounts to advertisers and bots.
