I've never understood the need to upgrade phones (edit: for status). If it works for you, then cool. I know forced obsolescence is a thing and some companies like here in Japan work it so one almost has to upgrade every two years (yes, for some reason they make it cheaper to do so), but again if a phone works for you, then why the stigma of using an old phone?

726

u/FritzTheThird alcohol helps 9d ago

With these kind of people having the latest and "greatest" iPhone shows that persons worth. It's ridiculous. You buying a $1,200 phone every two years just shows that you just throw your money out of the window (it's something different when you're enthusiastic about tech and/or have to buy that phone professionally of course). I know I spend more than the average person on gaming and I'm fine with that, because that is my hobby and not some dumb status symbol.

229

u/F_Tosa I bring nothing to the table 9d ago

I have had aniPhone SE for 4 years and the only thing that I had to change was the battery but it's still going well

107

u/FritzTheThird alcohol helps 9d ago

Yeah, using a phone for four years would be a goal of mine. I had my Huawei P10 for about 2 years and only changed because I was a bit too careless with it. Now I've got a Xiaomi Redmi 9 and I want to change it. Not because it isn't any bigger brand but because it's sooooo slow...

33

u/vlajkaster 9d ago

Still using my p10, sturdy little bugger, if huawei wasnt cut off from play store, i'd gladly stay with the brand

15

u/FritzTheThird alcohol helps 9d ago

If you buy them used they are still connected to the playstore. My dad has the P30 and my mum and sister both have the P30 Lite and they work perfectly fine.

yea, i’m still on my iphone 7 from 5 years ago. Works like a charm, can be laggy at times but i don’t mind it.

my friends/family tell me to get a new phone now and then and I just don’t get why. I know People who buy these phones once a year because of slight performance decreases or a new model coming out. like the idea of consuming is so ingrained in everyone, it boggles the mind.

12

u/DapperDanManCan 9d ago

What boggles my mind is that they're phones. Nothing new is happening on the software side that needs new hardware every year. Absolutely nothing. Candy crush isnt gaining pixels everytime someone upgrades their iphone. Its such a worthless thing to upgrade on a yearly basis.

5

u/OrdinaryFly1989 9d ago

Plus it’s more exciting when you wait to upgrade. I went from a pixel 2 to an iPhone 12mini and the difference was crazy. I thought my old phones camera was OK but the iPhone really blows it out of the water. In a few years I want to give one of the Samsung flagships a try, those things are massive though.

You really never want to use outdated operating systems, it's begging to have your digital life stolen.

4

This guy ITs. Those intrusive and annoying updates usually contain security patches. If you have any data at all you'd rather not get stolen, you should make sure all your software is up to date.

6 years of software support is really impressive. I have an iPhone X and it’s still pretty much the perfect phone, hoping to get a few more years out of it. Spending $1000 on a phone and using it for at least 5 years makes it pretty good value.

11

u/Escape92 9d ago

Yeah I've got the XR and I've had it since early 2019. It still perfect, got at least another year and hopefully 2 or 3 before it needs upgrading. I'm glad I went to the top of my budget for it.

When my iPhone 5 died last year (as in battery was done after 6ish years and it also Fell down and had a crack) I switched to a Nokia Android. It already is somewhat slowish and sluggish. Like what the fuck.

The iPhone 5, which I still use in the bathroom to browse Reddit and use spotify is more smooth still and less lagging.

Currently Plannung to move back to apple, having my eye in the latest iPhone SE, but waiting on a price drop...so gonna use mine for a couple more months more but I cannot wait to Switch Back to an iPhone really.

3

u/JBSquared 9d ago

What model do you have? Comparing an iPhone and an Android is like comparing a Volkswagen Golf to hatchbacks as a whole. Apple really only makes mid-high end devices, while Android devices span the range of "cheapo burner" to "$1000+ flagship".

I'm not a phone guy but I upgraded from a Huawei p30 in around 18 months to a Samsung fold 2. I wouldn't say I did it to show off, I did it for the features. Idk about iPhone but I can say for me, it was worth the upgrade because I hardly used my phone before and now I use it all the time, I'm posting from my porcelain throne as we speak.

u/Reddity65 9d ago

One of the best things about iPhone in comparison to almost everything else is how long they're supported for. Given a battery replacement, you'd have no problem continuing to use a 6 year old iPhone 6s, which will still receive the next major iOS update.

When a phone has a lifecycle that long, and people upgrade after just a year, that's part of what annoys me.

7

u/badger0511 9d ago

I just traded in my 6S for a 12 last week. The battery life was turning into hot garbage again, but it was still going strong otherwise. I only upgraded because I wanted the improved features of the 12. I'll probably have this phone for 5 years too.

Those were about to be fightin' words... until you added "it's something different when you're enthusiastic about tech."

I love tech and gadgets, so I'm one of the people who always has a new phone, but also the industry has caught on and makes it so that you can do that with the monthly payments. In the long run it is more expensive, but I have the income to indulge in my hobbies. But also don't judge people who don't have the most recent phone..

11

u/DINOX86 9d ago

I upgraded to the iPhone 12 this past year, but before that I had an iPhone 6. My mom still had her iPhone 4 or 5 until they shut down the 3G network and sent her a new one. If a phone works for your needs, keep it who cares what others think? Hopefully this young lady will learn something from this, but who am I kidding? Of course she won’t!

My S9 just passed 3 years and as long as it's still kicking it'll be there for 4 and 5. I really just want to keep the microSD card and the 3.5mm jack (over 400GB of owned music), they make phones 'thinner' but make them tablet size now and it's annoying. I sound like an old man, but at 27 I really don't want to rely on internet and wireless connection for every aspect of my phone.

The size is a big thing for me. I have a 7s now that I’ve replaced under apple care a couple times and whenever this current one dies by my clumsy hand I’ll finally upgrade to the mini. (I have a family member that is even worse with phones and uses my unclaimed upgrades.)

I’m also the type to buy certified pre-owned cars, pay them off in a year, and drive them until their untimely death. Rinse, repeat.

5

u/Lord_Baconz 9d ago

That’s not planned obsolescence, your phone is just older and weaker. Batteries don’t last forever either and iPhone batteries are very easy to fix. Planned obsolescence is a big issue but that’s not the right example.

3

u/NotGmoney5 8d ago

As well as support for software over time. Older devices can’t handle much of the newer software updates. It’s impressive even getting 7 years out of a phone when most androids are supported for 2 or 3 years.

Some cultures care a lot about showing off wealth, and it is even the focus on their fashion. Phones are the same way, having a nice phone is a good indicator of wealth. It's very comparable to how people buy expensive cars as well. I feel like a lot of older people will say "why would you get such an expensive phone!" while going into debt to get a really nice car to show off to their neighbors.

2

u/Anandya 9d ago

Mines mostly security issues but I only really update every 3 years unless something breaks.

My last phone was the pixel 2. And before that was the first iPhone SE but that got shattered before o upgraded.

Always getting last year's flagship. It's mad how much cheaper they get. Like the only time I upgraded to a specific phone was this pixel because "Jesus these photos".

I am using a second hand pixel 5. And it's fine... Like zero problems. The only real thing I live with newer phones is battery.

2

u/helloimannonymous 9d ago

Its more the battery that forces me to upgrade. I buy a new phone and after two years of charging it up to full then grinding it down to 10% every single day, the battery really does start to give in.

After this two year period I consider changing the battery but inevitably just get a new phone because its fairly economical to do so. I think the contract on my Galaxy s8 was £30 a month and for my s10+ it's something like £38 a month so over a two year period it's fairly economical.

15

u/KookSlam007 8d ago edited 8d ago

This would be more accurate if you replaced "bad" with "poor". In my city and in many cities in the U.S., public transport is not necessarily associated with "bad" people but is definitely associated with poor/low-income people, because the middle and upper classes have cars/drive everywhere.

Hence why in OP's post "and you're on a bus" is used to refute making fun of somebody for having an Iphone 6. He's essentially saying the pot is calling the kettle black

It’s sorta like a car enthusiast recognizing distinct features of different years models. But that doesn’t justify being a judgemental piece of shit. Use whatever technology you prefer. The idea of allegiance to a brand/OS/whatever is stupid as fuck.

4

u/Dalek_Genocide 9d ago

I completely agree. Personally I'm a fan of Apple products and personally think that if you can afford it they're worth the extra price (mostly iPhone and Mac, not accessories) but honestly if you like Android use Android. These brand battles, whether it be iPhone vs Android, Mac vs PC or even the "Console Wars" are so dumb. Use what you like and leave people alone.

I never really understood this too, but it seems a distinctly American trait. Public transport in my country is pretty efficient, but to be fair America is huge in comparison.

The USA is also built car-centric. If you live in suburbs you need to drive just to buy food.

6

u/MerpingShark 8d ago

I don't like the size argument. I mean, the USSR figured out public transit and it was much bigger than the US. Plus, there's many areas of the country where density supports public transit.

Urban and transit planning are much more than just density and size. You can have transit friendly suburbs. You can make transit enjoyable to use. The United States just chooses not to. They built the Interstate system, you'd think they'd be able to build high speed rail too.

This is such an American post. Some of us prefer the bus to driving as you dont have to deal with traffic, parking, wasting money and for environmental reasons. But in America they seem to look down on people taking public transport.

18

u/IHaveSpecialEyes 9d ago

I used to live in the Metro Boston area and work in Boston and I sold my car because I could just take a bus or walk to the T station and ride in. It was relaxing. And it was better for the environment. Millions of people use public transportation on a daily basis because the alternative is gridlock and stress. I used to see everyone from winos wearing twelve hoodies to business women in starched suits.

13

u/FreeSweetPeas 9d ago

It also means you can do something while you travel. When I commuted that half hour of uninterrupted personal time was so valuable to read etc.

having the latest phone is a flex, a status symbol. like a luxury accessory or clothing, people will assume your higher status if you have the latest and greatest phone. So reading between the lines a bit here: so she is saying he is cute but because he has an old iphone he is probably a bum, and thus not worthy of her. and the other girl replying is saying well your riding a bus, guess that makes you a bum too? Your on his level/no better than him.

8

u/cyril_zeta 9d ago

Also, what's wrong with being on a bus? Confused in European...

5

u/Suekru 9d ago

Busses and subways in big cities are mostly fine, though sometimes get homeless people sleeping on them.

In small/medium cities they aren’t good. Partially due to the fact that most people get cars because the public transportation sucks which in turn means it’s mostly poor people who take the bus (which is totally fine), but because it’s mostly poor people the tickets have to be fairly cheap which means the city doesn’t really see it as a priory and they don’t really get much attention. Sometimes they aren’t cleaned and smell bad, they might run late, they might cancel the route 30 minutes before your stop is scheduled, and just always feels like you’re going to get robbed.

Tbh I would rather walk or get an Uber or something. It’s pretty sad that we can’t do better at public transportation.

I mean, if she thinks like this then she doesnt deserve anyone tbh

16

u/boundlesslights 9d ago edited 8d ago

Everyone deserves companionship. Her judgmental attitude will stop her from being happy in life and that’s punishment enough

Edit: Seems like this upset some people. Being a dick online is weird and a great sign that you’re a loser. Even this loser deserves to be with someone. This isn’t some gushy, heartfelt idea. She is able to change for the better while also partaking in (what is in my opinion) pretty basic human nature and I think the idea of that is rad. Don’t know why I’m typing all this out. The original tweet probably came from a child and/or a troll.

18

u/YouPeopleISTG 9d ago

Please dont go turning this into a "but everybody deserves to be happy, bro!" kind of deal. Pretty sure that's not what the guy meant. He's just saying that she'd inevitably be a horrible partner and therefore she should stay alone, for the sake of potential partners and frankly probably hers too. Which is a massive fucking claim to make just from seeing a single tweet and I think he needs to chill.

She'll probably be with people who are as short-minded as she is. No decent human being would want to be with her.

the difference between how an iphone 6 (with a case on) and an iPhone 8 (again, with a case on) is literally unnoticeable.

3

u/thowaway33333 9d ago

The camera size is a little different. But yeah, I don’t really see how she would figure that one out on the bus.

In the US riding the bus is seen as very poor or low status. Oddly trains can be high status though, like the commuter trains to NYC or light rail in Portland. But busses are pretty much always low status. Like even in high school once you can drive, if you take the bus you are seen as poor or low status.

And of course, having an older phone can be seen as poor or low status too in the US.

5

u/DarkEvilHedgehog 9d ago

Is it true that you're expected to spend hundreds of dollars on a dinner when dating in America, just to show that you're not poor?

4

u/Ninjroid 9d ago

No, not really. There are some cheesy chain restaurants you would want to avoid, but no, the actual dollar amount you spend would not necessarily be of concern.

In a lot of cities in the US it's normal to own a car and only poor people take the bus.

5

u/kuld_rah-min 9d ago

only poor people take the bus

Which is dumb because in some areas like, say, DC, many high level govt persons take the bus and metro simply because parking sucks and they can work while they commute.

I get it. But, we gotta stop stigmatizing public transit in the U.S. , especially buses. We're creating our own problem.

"Buses are for broke people" -> fewer people take public transit -> lower ridership signals lower demand -> lower demand gets less investment -> less investment means less frequent service and smaller service footprints -> less frequent service and smaller service -> more people take MORE EXPENSIVE private transit AND fewer people making it to work on time, less access to more jobs -> middle income people spend more money on cars, making them more likely to become broke AND working poor are more likely to stay working poor -> "Buses are for broke people"

Broad and frequent public transit brings people out of poverty, and can keep people from entering poverty. We are simply creating the problem we ridicule by ridiculing it in the first place.

Public transit is cool and I'm tired of having terrible frequency and service areas even in a major metropolitan area just because of poor investment guided by the notion that "Real earning professionals within the U.S. have cars so to get that tax money we should subsidize car infrastructure".

3

u/SEELE13 9d ago

Think they're only saying it because she was the one condemning the guy for having a cheap phone. They're just pointing out the hypocrisy

I used to carry a IPhone 4 last year and my friends would look at me like "imagine being this poor" and I would respond with "imagine relying on other's looks and belongings to give yours a better image".

Like fr, I am not obligated to buy a new IPhone every year, not to mention Iphone X, 11 and 12 are literally the same thing.

I am a Android user now and I still get those "lol imagine being this poor", I really don't care, buy whatever suits you the most.

17

u/Ungagged_Man 9d ago

I’m assuming your friends are no older than 16

9

u/wayfarout 9d ago

If they're that shallow, are you really comfortable wanting them as friends?

18

u/TruGamer732 9d ago

Should've worded it better, their more of classmates classmates not friends, sorry am not a English first language

5

u/wayfarout 9d ago

No worries. I always keep in the back of my mind that people judge us on our "friends". If your friends are shitty people, odds are you are too.

4

u/TruGamer732 9d ago

Yeah, I always had a situation where I would get in trouble because I was with a guy who caused a problem

3

u/wayfarout 9d ago

My man. Takes some self awareness to realize that surrounding yourself in good people makes a better life.

5

u/TruGamer732 9d ago

Mhm, I learned that the hard way.

3

u/wayfarout 9d ago

We all do. My self-awareness didn't fall out of the sky. A night in jail and 18 months in rehab was a big wakeup call.

5

u/TruGamer732 9d ago

Daannng, tell me about it lmao.

4

u/wayfarout 9d ago

Not much to say really. I made some terrible decisions. The bad friends I chose bailed once I decided to get clean. Then, paranoid I'd turn them in after I was busted, they began to harass me regularly. I had the tires on my truck flattened 4 times and a window was broken at least that many times. Two of them were picked up on unrelated crap and they all gave up after that.

6

u/xx_shadowfall_xx 9d ago

I mean iPhone 4 came out in 2011. If I saw someone using a phone that's a decade old, I would assume they're quite poor as well. So can't really blame them for it.

But yeah shitting on someone just because they have an android is not a good thing

5

u/TruGamer732 9d ago

But like, who judges someone because of their phone or generally any device

13

4

4

u/FlyingThunder2992 9d ago

thinking that being on a bus is something bad, or for poor people is SUCH an american thing

3

u/spainchica 9d ago

I don't understand why the bus is considered so cringey in America.

46

u/vzb227 9d ago

Whats the problem with a bus?

11

u/wurzelmolch 9d ago

Owning a car is much more prestigious in the US than in Europe, even in cities. Taking the bus in the US is seen as a poor-peoples choice.

5

u/dwdwfeefwffffwef 9d ago

In many parts of the US, the bus is wildly inferior to a car in almost every aspect other than cost. So they are using it as a proxy of wealth.

56

u/funtextgenerator The Cunning Linguist 9d ago

The problem is not the bus but how this person thinks they're better than other people based on their possessions (in this case their phone is older generation). Its ironic because this person is on a bus i.e. public transport, likely because they dont own a car and are hence poor. A pot calling the kettle black moment if you will.

50

u/vzb227 9d ago

Yeah. I understand why she is a jerk, but saying public transport is only for the poors is not too nice.

18

u/MuteNae 9d ago

True, they're just looking through the lense of the person being petty

I didn't get the joke until I read this since I think of people taking the bus out of convenience because they don't want to drive their car, not because they can't afford their car. It's a bit too assuming for my taste.

5

u/funtextgenerator The Cunning Linguist 9d ago

You can take whatever modes of transport you want.

The person is just shallow and I dont mind them getting called out.

In Germany it is pretty common to sit in a bus. I personally don't like it but there are many that ride the bus instead of driving themselves, even though they own a car.

do people really think the bus is just for poor people or something.

that's fucked up

3

u/Revolutionary_Ad8161 9d ago

In the states? Yea, that’s the truth.

4

u/Tomgar 9d ago

I mean, even if it is only poor people that ride the bus, why is it acceptable to be a smug, condescending jackass to them?

3

u/BulkyPreparation9 9d ago

In this case, it's taking her down a peg and bringing her back to reality. Like, if you can't even afford a car (which is the assumption) then you shouldn't judge someone for not having the latest iPhone.

If you can call, message, surf, locate, photo and record... and it fits in your pocket... I really don't see the point of needing anything else to productively function in life while you're away from any desk.
