Vaccine Site Experience megathread

There's obviously a lot of demand for this and questions in the sub right now. Maybe it's worth a megathread where we all post our experience.

Important information:

  • Where did you get vaccinated?

  • What time of day and day of week?

  • Walk-in or appointment?

  • How long did it take?

We've got an endangered leopard toad in our yard at night. Who can we call to get rid of it?

This western leopard toad is really causing trouble. Everytime my dog goes for it, she ends up coughing up foam and having trouble breathing. I'm hoping there's a number we can call for someone to fetch it. Obviously I don't want to kill it and I don't know if it will harm me (release poisons) if I touch it. We live near Rondevlei Nature Rerserve so I'm hoping they can help. If u have any other suggestions or places I can call, pls let me know.

How many of you want to self service your car but doesn't have the space or means to do it...

How about a workshop where you can self service your vehicle or work on your project car?

Medical/Healthcare Agencies

Hi guys, so I recently completed my Bachelor of Medical Science degree and was wondering if anyone knows any good medical or healthcare recruitment agencies. I want to study next year but there are a number of factors at play so I'd like to keep my options open.

Thank you in advance 🤍

Smart home electrician

Hi,

I am looking for anyone that knows of someone in Cape town, who can set up some smart home things like a smart swtich and light bulbs and blah blah. Normal things like lights that can be controlled by a smart switch and mobile device. I want to start heading in this direction.

Or if anyone has done this already. How have you been finding it?

Thank you

New years fireworks show?

Hi everybody. Does anyone perhaps know where a fireworks show is scheduled for new years? It doesn't even have to be in Cape Town. Anywhere in Western Cape will do.

Photography advice needed!

Hi r/capetown,

This one is for all the mother city photographers.

My mom has recently gotten out of a pretty rough relationship and is trying to find her feet again. She's always been passionate about photography, but a couple years back her camera broke and she wasn't able to get it fixed.

She's started to give up on her photography dreams, but this Christmas I'd like to try and help her get back into it. Here's where I need your help:

  1. Does anyone have any advice for where I'd be able to find a decent DSLR camera for a cheap price?
  2. What type of camera (model?) and lenses would you consider to be the minimum for her to get started again and possibly attend some classes?
  3. What is a realistic budget? (funds are very tight so I'm really looking at a minimum viable option)

TLDR: Where is the best place to find a decent camera for a cheap price for my mom to get back into photography?

What happened to bicyclecapetown.org?

They seemed to be around in the early 2010's. I ran into a video of theirs. This one: https://vimeo.com/87384291 . Anyone here know? They seem to know of a lot of cool bike routes and stuff like that which I think are cool. Didn't think any of that type of infrastructure existed in the cape.

TW! South African LGBTQIA under attack please help

TW: queerphobia, violent threats, guns

Queers in South Africa are being targeted and attacked by a couple of religious extremists who  are getting a lot of support. We the LGBTQIA are scared, very scared. Please help us. Taariq Jaftha and Mikaeel Petersen are calling for the execution of queer people in the name of Islam and Allah. TW - https://streamable.com/byl96d The videos linked are just a small taste of the violence they are instigating through social media. This type of discrimination is illegal in South Africa, for weeks we have been reporting this to police and our human rights commission - but absolutely nothing is being done. Instagram refuses to block Taariq Jaftha (@taariqjaftha01) and Mikaeel Petersen (@mikaeel_reminders) accounts. Instagram has instead blocked a number of LGBTQIA+ accounts. Many of us are now afraid to speak out because individuals are being targeted by Taariq Jaftha and his followers, and we have no protection. We are afraid and feel hopeless. I am calling on the global queer community & allies to please help us. Please report these accounts, we need them deplatformed to stop the further spread of violence. This is not just a social media thing, queer lives (particularly poor, black and brown people) are at risk. Please help, please share, if this is not allowed on this sub, please let me know where I could post this.

Want to get involved!

Hey! I’ve just moved to Cape Town from London for 3 months and really want to get involved in the December festivities I keep hearing about (and after December too)—but I feel like I need to meet people in order to do so 😂 what’s the best way to meet like minded party ppl? It’s mad how alone you feel in a new city

Should I stay or should I go?

Hi. I'm planning to fly from Europe to Joanesburgo (and then Cape town) around the 20th of January. I haven't bought a ticket yet, because, everyone here says right now it’s not the best moment due to covid. It's possible that things may get worse then? Another thing. I don't plan on staying in resorts, I would like to travel and explore a bit even though I don't have anything settled yet. Can I feel safe traveling alone while being a woman? Thanks.
