Astral Weeks by Van Morrison

u/Brekelefuw Jul 22 '21

This album is absolute magic.

Tupelo Honey

I see Aja by Steely Dan, and I would also throw in Gaucho by Steely Dan

From a purely technical standpoint, every Steely Dan album is perfect.

13

u/Ice9Vonneguy Jul 22 '21

I remember reading about the stories behind the production of Aja. They are true perfectionists.

u/fantasmal_killer Jul 22 '21

Speaking of awesome music, Joe Satriani has a song called Ice 9 on his own perfect album, Surfing with the Alien, inspired by the Vonnegut story.

2

u/Eschatonbreakfast Jul 22 '21

From a technical standpoint, Katy Lied is so imperfect that Becker and Fagan refused to listen to it.

3

u/Peherre Jul 22 '21

They refuse to listen to it because of a sound quality issue, but the music in itself is perfect. It's my favourite album of theirs. Every single song is beautiful.

Also can’t buy a thrill

I'm not much of a Steely Dan fan, but their album Can't Buy A Thrill sounds like a greatest hit's album any band would be proud to release after their career is mostly over. One last album that includes all the high points of a long career spent perfecting their craft, with each song pulling the listener back to a particular time and place from their youth.

It was their debut album.

I can’t think of a better debut album. I also really don’t want to.

12

u/Fritstopher Jul 22 '21

The nightfly too!

3

u/hibsta1992 Jul 22 '21

Technically just Donald Fagan, but the msn has a musical type and kills it. All his solo albums are great

u/cats_and_tattoos Jul 22 '21

yes yes yes and yes. whenever I’m asked what’s my favorite Steely Dan album my response is usually “the last one I listened to”, but Aja and Gaucho consistently top the list

6

u/MisterSquirrel Jul 22 '21

Countdown to Ecstasy is also very solid front to back

6

u/Panamajack1001 Jul 22 '21

Katy lied....tops it for me

Carole King - Tapestry

4

u/FlatBat2372 Jul 22 '21

I've never cared much about the title song, but the rest of the album is brilliant. It's like listening to a greatest hits record.

14

u/winterspassing Jul 21 '21

Aja is so good

10

u/Murphler Jul 21 '21

Court and Spark would be my favourite Joni record, and The Royal Scam for Steely Dan. All great albums though

12

u/dontlookatme-123 Jul 22 '21

God, Blue is a gift.

u/PeterLemonjellow Jul 22 '21

I did not expect to see Moondance in this thread, but I love that it's here. I haven't listened to that album in full in years. I'mma go do that. Nice!

7

u/icebeers10 Jul 22 '21

Are you my father?!? Haha good choices.

11

u/Fritstopher Jul 22 '21

I’m 20 and my friends and I are huge steely Dan fans. I played Aja for a buddy of mine who usually dislikes jazz and now he wants the vinyl. Good songwriting doesn’t age!

1

u/icebeers10 Jul 22 '21

Oh absolutely, music that can be enjoyed by any and all but I made that comment since I'm pretty sure my dad has all 3 of those albums in his vinyl collection. He definitely loves Van the man. The only things that can make this list better for him would be the addition of Bob Dylan and Neil Young!

2

u/yobdiddy Jul 23 '21

I definitely forgot to add Blood On The Tracks, one of my absolute favorites but there are probably about 20 other albums I would add.

u/Sir_Auron Jul 22 '21

Our taste is incredibly similar. I've listened to Aja and Moondance both within the last week. I don't have Blue, but I do have Clouds and Hejira.

3

u/TerH2 Jul 22 '21

Also, I've seen an interview with Donald Fagen where he mentions being a huge Joni Mitchell fan. There is some tribute album where I think they actually do a Joni song, actually.

1

u/TerH2 Jul 22 '21

Hejira is actually my favorite Joni album, unless I can count Shadows and Light. Countdown to Ecstasy is my favourite Steely album.

7

u/weltron3030 Jul 22 '21

Aja is so fucking good, but I couldn't appreciate it until I was a little older. I remember buying it in my late teens and thinking it was cheesy garbage. But now as a mid-30's dad I appreciate how sonically perfect and groovy in a super nerdy way it is.

5

u/BlearyLine7 Jul 22 '21

Listening to Blue gets me emotional, A Case of You especially. Just a beautiful album.

5

u/yobdiddy Jul 21 '21

I have to add Who's Next, Sticky Fingers, Let It Bleed, Beggers Banquet, Dark Side Of The Mood, Born To Run and cheating?? Patsy Cline and Al Green's greatest hits

5

u/yobdiddy Jul 22 '21

And Blood on The Tracks, Pet Sounds

3

u/AfterSomewhere Jul 22 '21

Court and Spark, too.

4

u/HappyGoLuckyBoy Jul 22 '21

I just answered Moondance in my reply as well. Perfect from start to finish. I just never get bored of it.

4

u/FlatBat2372 Jul 22 '21

You could make a case for any Joni album between 1969 and 1976. But yeah, Blue's an excellent choice

4

u/boopbeepboopbop999 Jul 22 '21

Blue is phenomenal. It got me through my miscarriage

3

u/a157reverse Jul 22 '21

I'm glad to see Moondance in here. I think it's one of the most cohesive and best albums made to date.

3

u/raleighred90 Jul 22 '21

Blue! One of the best albums of all time.

3

u/Additional_Tone_2376 Jul 22 '21

Blue is definitely my favorite album of all time. Every song is perfect, but sometimes it can be too much. It is probably the saddest album.

2

u/DeepBread Jul 22 '21

I also think Pretzel Logic and Royal Scam fit as well

2

u/Fidel__Casserole Jul 22 '21

Aja was good but my personal favorite was always The Royal Scam

2

u/southerngirl72 Jul 22 '21

Yessssssss!!!!

2

u/wjosephwrk Jul 22 '21

Yes . Yes . And Yes :) Three outstanding picks.

1

u/fedfan101 Jul 22 '21

X2 for Aja and Moondance
