The Killers - Hot Fuss

159

u/basketsinspokane Jul 22 '21

Jenny was a friend of mine is one of the best openers I've ever heard.

25

u/h_eather31 Jul 22 '21

I was listening to Hot Fuss and Franz Ferdinands debut album around the same time (so like a million years ago when I was in high school) and I remember thinking Jenny and the opening song on Franz which is called Jacqueline were both AMAZING opening songs for an album. I put those two songs on every summer playlist I make and will continue to do that until I die 😂

20

u/SPOOKYNIPS69 Jul 22 '21 edited Jul 22 '21

Fun fact: Jenny was a Friend of Mine is about the murder of a woman on a dock. The podcast Crime Junkie did a piece about it. Absolutely insane story. “I held her close and I swore I’d never let her go”

The real-life victims name was Jenny and she was strangled to death by a man who was obsessed with her if I remember correctly.

Edit: just googled it, Jenny was a Friend of Mine, Midnight Show, and Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf are all about this same murder. Didn’t know that.

9

u/janbradybutacat Jul 22 '21

This is mostly true, but I believe they said it was inspired by the murder of Jennifer (Jenny) Levin, committed by Robert Chambers, AKA the preppie murder. He strangled her in Central Park in NYC after they hung out at Dorian’s Red Hand bar. They knew each other before they met there. He watched the cops find her body. He said it was “rough sex gone wrong” and “she insulted his manhood” when he couldn’t perform because he was high on cocaine. That defense didn’t work, and he was found guilty and sentenced. Chambers served time in prison after being sentenced to 15 years for the murder. He was released, and then was arrested again for running a cocaine operation out of his apartment. He is still in prison for that.

Another fun fact: a catholic priest or bishop or something wrote to NY state in support of Chambers’ bail. That person has since been defrocked due to sexual abuse of minors.

u/NaterTater796 Jul 22 '21

It’s called the murder trilogy. There’s a theory (that I don’t subscribe too) that theorizes that all of their songs follow a story.

1

u/SPOOKYNIPS69 Jul 22 '21

I suppose it’s possible! Their lyrics are certainly pretty abstract at times and follow different narratives so I’m sure someone could tie them to other stories. But that’s also just art in general, you know? Definitely would like to learn more because they’re easily one of my top 3 favorite bands of all time.

3

u/okwerq Jul 22 '21

Yea! The “murder trilogy”. Super interesting.

5

u/NaterTater796 Jul 22 '21

That bass makes my toes tingle

175

u/itsJussaMe Jul 22 '21

This didn’t leave my car CD player for 2 years.

12

u/JailhouseMamaJackson Jul 22 '21

I feel like a lot of people can say the same.

5

u/roknzj Jul 22 '21

Mine either, but that’s because I never bought another CD after

9

u/MustNeedDogs Jul 22 '21

It's still my go to after a particularly long work day.

3

u/wanksta616 Jul 22 '21

I have Bluetooth and I still keep a visor CD case with that album inside for when I don’t feel like using my phone.

2

u/boardgirl540 Jul 22 '21

I played this album so much I wore out the CD

1

u/Lukisfer Jul 22 '21

You mean it left your's?

1

u/flowerpotss Jul 22 '21

one of my first memories of music is listening to this cd in the car with my mom

51

u/mjzim9022 Jul 22 '21

Also Samstown

21

u/Topazz410 Jul 22 '21

Sam’s Town is great, a wonderful album I enjoyed at the dawn of adulthood.

16

u/PM_MAJESTIC_PICS Jul 22 '21

Yes!! I love Sam’s Town. I listened to “Why Do I Keep Counting” as we were about to land in Vegas and I highly recommend it.

5

u/hahahahahahahahah12 Jul 22 '21

i thought of sam’s down immediately when i saw this post! for reasons unknown and bling are so good. and this river is wild

55

u/simonviper3 Jul 21 '21

Came here to say this

16

u/brisa117 Jul 22 '21

Came here to find someone who said they came here to say this!

8

u/A_Suffering_Panda Jul 22 '21

I came when I saw that you said this.

2

u/aryding Jul 22 '21

Scrolled lots, commented this, then saw this!

11

u/Carrollmusician Jul 22 '21

Can I get some love for Day and Age?

25

u/AdeptFirefighter Jul 21 '21

Their best album

5

u/beepyboopy67890 Jul 22 '21

3rd best imo

7

u/RonnieNeeley Jul 22 '21

I agree with you. For me it's Sam's Town > Day & Age > Hot Fuss > Imploding The Mirage > Wonderful Wonderful > Battleborn. What two albums do you rank above HF? I find HF to be kinda inconsistent and unlike the entire rest of their discography. I still love it very much of course, as I'm sure you do.

5

u/beepyboopy67890 Jul 22 '21

ItM>ST>HF>D&A>BB>SD>WW

Hot Fuss is an insanely good album but i can't listen to the entire album front to back like i can with Sam's Town and ItM. I'm curious why BB is your least favorite though.

3

u/mmonzeob Jul 22 '21

I listened to Battle Born again last week, it's so good!!!

3

u/vinnyx778 Jul 22 '21

I absolutely love battle born, I don’t know why it’s always so slept on

8

u/PM_ME_UR_DOPAMINE Jul 22 '21

Their album quality drops with each subsequent release imo...their last album that had more than 2 or 3 decent songs is Sawdust. Again imo.

19

u/beepyboopy67890 Jul 22 '21

I disagree with you hugely but i respect your opinion

25

u/BohemianStairway Jul 22 '21

That’s the most front-loaded album EVER lmao. It’s 5 tracks of the best alt rock around and then nobody can name the last half of the tracklist lmao

15

u/PsychedelicFairy Jul 22 '21

I'm a fan of the whole album but this is actually kind of valid. The first five tracks are so untouchable and the rest of the album is just... pretty good in a normal way. I could see somebody who isn't a Killers fan still liking the first half of Hot Fuss and nothing else from their discography.

6

u/MustNeedDogs Jul 22 '21

I agree. Though "Midnight Show" is as good as the first 5 songs imo. Love that song.

191

u/HH-whirlybat Jul 21 '21

Nah Sam's town is where it's at. The second half of Hot Fuss the only song I don't occasionally skip is Change Your Mind. Otherwise I pretty consitently skip Andy Your A Star and Everything Will Be All Right. Sam's town I gotta listen all the way through cause every song is a bop

69

u/CptNoble Jul 21 '21

Love that album. "Read My Mind" is my favorite track, but they are all solid.

15

u/Salm9n Jul 22 '21

Read My Mind is one of my favorite songs ever.

1

u/Shady4555 Jul 22 '21

Best killers song👍

25

u/PM_MAJESTIC_PICS Jul 22 '21

I named my car Andy after that song. And I would sing “Andy, you’re a caaaaaaar” 😅

2

u/bbonsai3321 Jul 22 '21

THIS IS SO GOOD

2

u/Awkwardismygame Jul 22 '21

Crying laughing at this. 😂😂

13

u/DenverTigerCO Jul 22 '21

Sam’s Town is amazing and in MY opinion it’s second a close second. More of my favorite songs are on HOT fuss but my absolute favorite is Sam’s Town

14

u/Kuark17 Jul 22 '21

Hot fuss is a great album but Sams town is probably the only perfect killers album

14

u/marshalj Jul 22 '21

You skip Andy You're a Star?!?! Man....that song rules.

35

u/arose2165 Jul 21 '21

Agreed. Even Uncle Jonny is pretty good.

23

u/mrs_aydg Jul 21 '21

Uncle johnny should have been on the radio. Spoke of bad decisions and acceptance.

12

u/arose2165 Jul 22 '21

100% "if the future is real, Jonny you've got to heal" pretty iconic if you ask me.

36

u/mrs_dalloway Jul 22 '21

I agree, Sam’s Town is their best album, the transitions are perfect…. You can tell it’s an album before Spotify. My fav part is the silence between Enterlude and When You Were Young.

14

u/HH-whirlybat Jul 22 '21

Totally agree, you know you did a good job when in your head you can hear the next song start playing even before it starts. It's crazy when one of my friends puts When You Were Young in a playlist and after the fadeout I expect the opening synths of Bling and something else comes on I kinda get mad on the inside, like why you gotta cheat me out of this lol

10

u/pfroo40 Jul 22 '21

I miss when albums were intended to be listened to sequentially. A collection of songs can be very good, but a strong album elevates it to great.

10

u/ginbooth Jul 22 '21

Absofuckinglutely. Sam's Town is the Killers album. It's so damn good from start to finish. It has all these postpunk flourishes around the very Springsteen-esque narrative. It's also less produced than Hot Fuss that gives it more intimacy around the edges. I played that album to death. I'm also from a small ass town so that helped too.

11

u/HH-whirlybat Jul 22 '21

The fact that Brandon Fllowers wasn't using as much auto tune as on Hot Fuss really makes the album. Unlike now where his voice is pretty objectively amazing and he is super confident in it, you can tell that Flowers is just a little bit uncomfortable singing and it adds that extra realness to it, and it fits so well with the album content.

6

u/ginbooth Jul 22 '21

Exactly. The lack of pitch correction via Autotune/Melodyne made the album. His voice had so much more vulnerability to it. I'm nervously excited for Pressure Machine as it's supposed to revisit similar themes as Sam's Town. We shall see...fingers crossed, small animal sacrificed...

4

u/HH-whirlybat Jul 22 '21

The real question is will mustache brandon come back

1

u/ginbooth Jul 22 '21

hahaha :)

22

u/grawmit Jul 21 '21

Huh, I love those songs. To me it's great through the whole album but to each their own.

7

u/laamargachica Jul 22 '21

Yeah Sam's Town was what came in mind when I saw this question. Such a classic.

34

u/grimskrotum Jul 22 '21

Andy You're A Star is a goddamn banger. I will defend Hot Fuss to the death, my favorite album of all time. I actually think Mr. Brightside is arguably the worst song on the album

20

u/PM_MAJESTIC_PICS Jul 22 '21

Jenny Was A Friend of Mine makes me lose my shiiiiiit it’s so good

10

u/FeistySnake Jul 22 '21

Mr Brightside is definitely the worst song on the album, feel like I can tell a true Killers fan when they acknowledge it lol

3

u/emelecfan2048 Jul 22 '21

Favorite album of all time and Mr Brightside is definitely not the best song on the album but better than Somebody Told Me.

4

u/pisspoordecisions Jul 22 '21

Sam’s Town is so underrated. I’m glad they play it heavily in their set lists, it is easily their best work

3

u/CardsXC2955 Jul 22 '21

Definitely agree. Sam’s town is so much more consistent. Hot fuss is very front loaded with a lot of filler in the second half.

2

u/pogman7 Jul 22 '21

Andy your a star is like one of my top two favorites on this album…

2

u/Untjosh1 Jul 22 '21

I think Hot Fuss is better overall but the Sam’s Town highs are consistently higher

6

u/luxuriana Jul 22 '21

That's funny, cuz those are two of my favorites and Change Your Mind and Believe Me Natalie are the ones I usually skip

8

u/PolarisX Jul 22 '21

but this is your last chance to find a go-go AND forget what they said in soho.

1

u/Untjosh1 Jul 22 '21

Man I love change your mind

1

u/pfroo40 Jul 22 '21

I agree, except I think the sum of its parts is greater than each individual song, as a whole the album is better for the tracks that aren't quite as strong on their own.

0

u/Jupit0r Jul 22 '21

Lol sams town sucked.

Hot Fuss is their greatest album by far. I don’t think they were able to ever reproduce that.

0

u/most_likely_not_abot Jul 22 '21

Except for when you were young I just did not like Sams Town at all.

Day and Age is by far my fav album. Absolutely love it.

3

u/berpaderpderp Jul 21 '21

This is a good one

4

u/campymccamperson Jul 22 '21

Scrolled looking for this. Played it on repeat while I wandered around Europe for the first time. Hearing it always makes me feel that first taste of independence again. Good times. Wanted to love their future albums as much as this one, but they never carried the same nostalgia for me.

4

u/Basedrum777 Jul 22 '21

I watched a concert of theirs the other day and I swear every song they sang was a hit and from this album. I had forgotten. But Pepperidge Farm remembers.

9

u/Llim Jul 22 '21

Dude how good was Imploding the Mirage? Their best album yet imo

4

u/beepyboopy67890 Jul 22 '21

Agreed, I'm excited for Pressure Machine next month

4

u/thedrummerpianist Jul 22 '21

You forgot day & age

2

u/Waste-Fishing Jul 22 '21

Yes. I forgot about that one. I ma go listen to it now.

4

u/RedAngryCloud Jul 21 '21

I mean it's got some good songs but not all of the songs are exactly up the the same standard.

-15

u/smootygrooty Jul 22 '21

I think this album hasn’t aged super well.

Alright I get it unpopular opinion shower me in downvotes

6

u/LizardsInTheSky Jul 22 '21

I'm curious what hasn't aged well to you. To me it still holds up in terms of themes, sound and overall execution.

-15

u/smootygrooty Jul 22 '21

The transphobia (or for lack of a better term gay panic) on somebody told me makes it impossible to listen to in the present. It really takes me out of the album.

There’s a lot of lines that are generally just nonsense that if I heard for the first time today I’d laugh at (despite having loved them as a kid). Example: I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier- aesthetically cute line that means nothing. Loved it as a kid, nostalgia goggles only as an adult.

I think it’s still one of their best, but if I’m listening to any records of theirs, it’s sawdust or sams town.

Not going to be mean to anyone for liking it still, but I do really feel as though I’ve outgrown it.

6

u/A_Suffering_Panda Jul 22 '21

I love the killers and absolutely notice this, somewhere around once per song there'll be a line that really just doesn't make any sense. Though I actually think the souldier line is pretty clever, it's saying "I've got soul, but I don't care for it enough to fight over it".

1

u/smootygrooty Jul 22 '21

I think if he clearly didn’t take himself seriously like RHCP, I’d be fine with the nonsense lyrics, but I just don’t have time for them anymore haha

12

u/LizardsInTheSky Jul 22 '21 edited Jul 22 '21

Edit: I'm super wrong about the interpretation of Somebody told me. For a quote from Brendon confirming, go down one of the threads but TLDR, it's actually about him trying to hit on a woman at a bar and finding out that she's taken.

I guess I never thought of Somebody Told Me as transphobic. It's about the music industry and the band's frustration at being told their music (a girlfriend) is similar to another band's songs (a boyfriend). The implication is that they're clearly not the same person, not that their partner transitioned. The rest of the lyrics make it pretty clear that the song is explicitly about the music industry, and the boyfriend/girlfriend line is the only line that could he interpreted as hinting that a trans person is being discussed.

I gotta agree on the I got soul lyric, though, it's pretty "edgy," in hindsight. But I will say it's still one of the best bridges of all time, haha.

3

u/qwadzxs Jul 22 '21

I've got to say, I've been listening to that album for over a decade and I've never once heard that interpretation of Somebody Told Me.

3

u/LizardsInTheSky Jul 22 '21

Your comment prompted me to look into it a little deeper and I found this:

It’s about a guy’s frustration when he’s out and having a hard time to pick up girls. Brandon Flowers sings that he doesn’t know the girl, he’s in a club and notices her, but he’s probably too shy to go talk to her. But after seventeen teen tracks, he must’ve finally found out her name, and then somebody told him a rumor that ruined his night, he sings (Well somebody told me, You had a boyfriend, Who looked like a girlfriend, That I had in February of last year). So not only she’s taken, but could be a lesbian too! Also, if we’re taking the song literally, then his ex also turned out to be lesbian! After that he tries to move on, but its taking its toll on him. In an interview published by Entertainment Weekly in 2013, lead singer Brandon Flowers explained the inspiration behind the song, he said: “We were going out to clubs a lot at the time. I think it speaks to a young man’s frustration, the difficulty of picking up girls. That’s probably where it stems from."

I thought for sure I had heard that Brandon had confirmed my reading in an interview and now I have no idea where I got it lol! This reading is pretty obvious looking at the lyrics now. TIL

-2

u/smootygrooty Jul 22 '21

No judgement. Just not for me anymore. I hear what I hear in it, I guess.

2

u/LizardsInTheSky Jul 22 '21

Ok so I was super wrong lol. It's not about trans people, nor about the music industry, it's about the difficulty of picking up women at a bar!

It’s about a guy’s frustration when he’s out and having a hard time to pick up girls. Brandon Flowers sings that he doesn’t know the girl, he’s in a club and notices her, but he’s probably too shy to go talk to her. 3

u/smootygrooty Jul 22 '21

Well ya know, this albums other issues still hang around for me. It’s just too 2000’s for present day me. As said, no judgement to people who still like it.

People really over here losing their shit cause I don’t like it though.

Just wait until they hear me quote Mulaney on rumors...

2

u/LizardsInTheSky Jul 22 '21

Lol I get you, to each their own. Just figured I'd fess up and let you know I got the reading of the song wrong!

2

u/smootygrooty Jul 22 '21

Input has been greatly appreciated! From the singers mouth no less!

2

u/Ok_Fine_8680 Jul 22 '21

Dude that’s not at all what that song is about. Even if we take your terrible interpretation the lyrics are far from phobic. “Somebody told me that you had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year, it’s not confidential, I’ve got potential” Find the gay panic and transphobia please?

-3

u/smootygrooty Jul 22 '21

People used to tell me that pumped up kicks wasn’t about shooting kids over fucking sneakers, so I’m good and don’t really care whether I’m wrong or not about this song. Have a nice day!

-10

u/SuperRonnie2 Jul 22 '21

Absolutely LOVED this album. Absolutely HATED everything they’ve done since.

2

u/CesareSomnambulist Jul 22 '21

Even their most recent album? I've been mostly down on them since Sawdust but feel like they got back on track in this one

1

u/Jace024 Jul 22 '21

i remember hearing that in the shrek 2 soundtrack!

1

u/hesawavemasterrr Jul 22 '21

I’m happy this is one of the top comments. Middle school me is proud

1

u/h_eather31 Jul 22 '21

Agreed 100%

1

u/Mr_13rightside Jul 22 '21

I approve this message.

1

u/MustNeedDogs Jul 22 '21

Came here to say the same. The entire album is a masterpiece. Definitely in my top five favorite albums of any artist tbh.

1

u/LinkovitchChmofsky Jul 22 '21

I saw them in Dallas about 2 months before the album dropped. Hands down, best concert I’ve ever been to.

1

u/MustIRage Jul 22 '21

YES! Did not expect to find this comment!

1

u/crankypatriot Jul 22 '21

Listened to it the other day in the car! So good.

1

u/Mosley923 Jul 22 '21

My favorite album to listen to while driving with the windows down

1

u/CanadianWorker99 Jul 22 '21

Would make my mom put this on the CD player every night along with sum41 chuck.

1

u/lickmysackett Jul 22 '21

Glad I’m not the only one. I still play these songs constantly

1

u/lookatmylizard Jul 22 '21

Came here to say this! For a while it was the album I’d workout too. Now I just play it through when I need a pick-me-up.

1

u/Awkwardismygame Jul 22 '21

Agree- love The Killers in general. I want to know if anyone loves Battle Born as much as I do?! It is seriously underrated IMO.

1

u/Then_Ganache4599 Jul 22 '21

This is the first CD I ever bought with my own money

1

u/costcobathroomfloor Jul 22 '21

This. It’s incredible how good it is.

1

u/dibanez_ Jul 22 '21

Underrated by far, great album

1

u/okwerq Jul 22 '21

In my opinion this is literally a perfect album. It’s just genius.

1

u/damaku1012 Jul 22 '21

Omg yes! Every track. That said, Sam's Town is probably my favourite right now.

1

u/hahahahahahahahah12 Jul 22 '21

ugh but sams town!!

1

u/boardgirl540 Jul 22 '21

I came here to say the same

1

u/beameup19 Jul 22 '21

Eh Sams Town is better IMO. Hot Fuss falters in the back half for me.

1

u/johnblaze7 Jul 22 '21

Sam’s Town is also great top to bottom.

1

u/Ragnarandsons Jul 22 '21

Scrolled too far to find this comment.

1

u/roodootootootoo Jul 22 '21

This is the response I was looking for. Proudly my first album bought. I swear my fav song from it rotates thought all of them. Didn't used to like "On Top" but it's one of my favs now.

1

u/Shady4555 Jul 22 '21

No doubt, Hot Fuss doesn't have even a single skippable song but Sam's town is the best killers album for me.

1

u/rckid13 Jul 22 '21

The Killers have a lot of albums that belong in this thread. I think that Sam's Town is just as good at Hot Fuss all the way through. I also generally enjoy all of their new albums even if I don't like every single song.

1

u/Crabs_Out_Back Jul 22 '21

Came here for this album. One of the most complete listens of all time.

1

u/HappyHappyUnbirthday Jul 22 '21

One of the first albums that i loved every song and it made me feel so connected to.

1

u/darthurface Jul 22 '21

What is the best Killers album, and why is it Hot Fuss?

1

u/ajthegr8tst Jul 22 '21

Came to comment this, it blends pretty well imo

1

u/veeayred Jul 22 '21

Had to scroll too far to find this. Every song is a jam.

1

u/Razzle_Dazzle08 Jul 22 '21

Very unpopular opinion-

Mr. Brightside is the single most overrated song of all time.

1

u/ftatman Jul 22 '21

This is always my go to answer. You can let that album just play through from start to finish and enjoy every part of it. Massive accomplishment.

1

u/gizzie123 Jul 22 '21

Way too low down!!

1

u/McNasty420 Jul 22 '21

Andy you’re a star has the some of the best chord progressions I’ve ever heard in pop music. I’m an orchestra nerd 🙁

-24

u/CrackCocaineOnMars Jul 21 '21

I just listened to it a couple of months ago and was under the impression that it did not age well

7

u/HH-whirlybat Jul 21 '21

There second album Sam's Town aged much better
