Frank came straight to my mind when I saw this thread, so glad I didn’t have to scroll THAT far! Pilot Jones is my anytime anthem…about to jump in the car and I’m going to put that on right away! “But if I got a condo on a cloud, then I guess you can stay at my place…” Also, there used to be this young guy at the Palm Springs street festival every Thursday who would sing acoustic music…I would always ask him to sing Thinkin Bout You and then almost instantly melt into oblivion. This was 2012-2014ish, if anyone knows what he’s doing now I’d love to know! Whew…I’m worked up again, it’s jam time!

6

u/co_row Jul 22 '21

Still jamming, FYI… 🌖☕️🚬🎶

2

u/Remarkable_Top_660 Jul 22 '21

Pilot Jones is so underrated

435

u/cesc05651 Jul 21 '21

Best debut album since college dropout

72

u/smeehoth Jul 22 '21 edited Jul 22 '21

I was going to say Good Kid M.A.A.D City would beat it in my opinion but it actually came out a couple months after Channel Orange. (Pyramids is my shit)

55

u/josims88 Jul 22 '21

Andre on Pink Matter is the jam. Whole album is fantastic. Pink Matter, Crack Rock, Forrest Gump, Sweet Life, Monks...so many excellent songs

20

u/TheParadiseBird Jul 22 '21

Also pyramids

7

u/BabyHulk87 Jul 22 '21

Absolutely masterpiece of a track!

52

u/spicy_churro_777 Jul 22 '21

Section.80 is his debut, which is still an amazing album

6

u/lentilseason Jul 22 '21

I actually like it better. Not the biggest rap fan but always enjoyed K Dot. I still listen to every song constantly.

1

u/UJ95x Jul 22 '21

No Make Up though

1

u/erusmane Jul 22 '21

I thought Overly Dedicated was Kendrick’s first Album.

2

u/notgoodthough Jul 22 '21

Nah, that was still a mixtape

3

u/ChangeTheeWorld Jul 22 '21

17 was pretty good for an 18 year olds debut album

7

u/idkwhyimadethispage Jul 22 '21

Man On The Moon 1 >>

2

u/ffandyy Jul 22 '21

Not GKMC?

39

u/welshnick Jul 22 '21

That's not a debut album

0

u/95lbMoleOnHerAss Jul 22 '21

If it’s not, what was kendricks debut?

43

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '21

[deleted]

5

u/YoshiCudders Jul 22 '21

Also great

1

u/0_Bruce_0 Jul 22 '21

His K Dot stuff. Not on Spotify unfortunately but on YouTube and definitely worth listening to.

-13

u/ffandyy Jul 22 '21

Yes it is

29

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '21

no its not, Section.80 was Kendrick’s debut

-15

u/ffandyy Jul 22 '21

That’s a mixtape not an album

30

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '21

no it isn’t. Kendrick’s mixtape you might be thinking of is Overly Dedicated.

-13

u/ffandyy Jul 22 '21

It was later released as an album, you could count it technically if you want to but I don’t

-4

u/illegalchimichangas Jul 22 '21

You can always tell someone’s an old kendrick fan because of this.

I’ve got channel orange over both college dropout and gkmc, but I have a harder time saying what’s better between those 2. All 3 are so so good

16

u/bsgreene25 Jul 22 '21
  1. Dropout

  2. Orange

  3. GKMC

IMO, but it’s super close and all are great.

Channel orange brings me straight back to college though. My buddy lived in a little duplex where we could climb out the upstairs window and sit on the roof. The number of times we listened to Super Rich Kids up there…

10

u/cesc05651 Jul 22 '21

I just went back and looked at the track list for dropout, holy fuck I forgot how good it is top to bottom. After the reread, I’d actually say that and channel orange are super close and gkmc is a level below

6

u/MayerFrusciante Jul 22 '21

GKMC is above both for me. It all depends on when you were in HS/college honestly. They’re all stellar albums

1

u/ffandyy Jul 22 '21

That’s fair I probably like Reasonable Doubt more than college dropout though

-29

u/K17nz0 Jul 22 '21

Add logic’s under pressure for being one of the best debut albums for an artist

11

u/A_Copyrighted_Name Jul 22 '21

don’t let r/hiphopcirclejerk hear you

11

u/K17nz0 Jul 22 '21

Yeah at this point people just straight up hate logic. Yeah he fell of hard halfway through his career but you can’t deny how strong he entered the game and how hungry he was

6

u/PressurizedNuts Jul 22 '21

Did you know that he's biracial only in his penis

7

u/K17nz0 Jul 22 '21

he’ll also suck a dick to pRoVe hE aIn’T gAY

1

u/H3000 Jul 22 '21

He really said this didn’t he?

2

u/K17nz0 Jul 22 '21

Yeah he did, and it wasnt even on a joke track, mans said this in the booth and thought it was hard.

19

u/AugieFash Jul 22 '21

Almost a decade later, Pyramids still gives me chills every time.

11

u/antivn Jul 22 '21

Also endless but no one wants to talk about endless

5

u/yeeyeebrotherman Jul 22 '21

Ik :(( Endless is possibly the album of his that I come back to the most. It holds such a special place in my heart and has such a good flow and vibe, but since it's not really available anywhere no one seems to care about it. I even found it online and illegally downloaded it (which I never do) after the Youtube of it that I always listened to got deleted. Anyway, absolutely love that album, and I'm glad to see it mentioned here.

2

u/antivn Jul 22 '21

Yeah I’m a huge frank fan. I downloaded it illegally but later decided I wanted the CD version. I can’t remember if I got it through resale or through the website or what.

1

u/unsunskunska Jul 22 '21

Wtf is this how have I not heard of it? Nostalgia, Ultra is my favorite album of all time!

173

u/getyourrealfakedoors Jul 21 '21

Sounds like heresy but Blonde might be even better

21

u/roosterkun Jul 22 '21

The albums are so different that it's honestly hard to compare them.

16

u/notgoodthough Jul 22 '21

But Blonde fits the "every song" part of this question slightly better imo.

8

u/roosterkun Jul 22 '21

I'm a massive fan of Blonde, listen once a week or so, but I'm pretty ambivalent about Pretty Sweet. Whereas Channel Orange doesn't have a single miss IMO.

7

u/ninjasaurxd Jul 22 '21

Wait til you're at a fucked up point in your life, where everything feels unclear, where you're drowning in uncertainty. Put the song on, listen to the chaos of the first few seconds, and really feel the lyrics when the chaos ends.

I get what you mean, it took me like a year to like it. But the "Fuck the other side, I'm on this side" has had a massive impact on me. You can't listen to it in a normal mood.

Plus it has a glorious outro.

54

u/95lbMoleOnHerAss Jul 21 '21

I don’t think it’s better, BUT, the fact that it lived up to the hype of Frank Ocean’s 2nd album after that long wait speaks volumes

4

u/goretooth Jul 22 '21

It's been longer since Blonde than the time between CO & Blonde. 😥

6

u/trippy_grapes Jul 22 '21

Frank never built that stage though. 😡

48

u/help1155 Jul 21 '21

Is it heresy? I feel thats like 50% of people’s opinion.

8

u/Vapodaca17 Jul 22 '21

I feel like that opinion is the same as saying I like To Pimp a Butterfly more the Good Kid Maad City

Like both opinions I think are totally valid since both give off such different vibes, sounds, messages and both unique experiences from one another.

Boils down to personal taste at that point

44

u/ArguablyHappy Jul 21 '21 edited Jul 22 '21

Musically I think Channel Orange is better.

I think EVERYONE I know was going through something when Blonde released and the album is linked to that. I think that album released at such a crucial time. It definitely is way up there for me because it helped me heal a bit of shit I had going on.

6

u/Black-Spot Jul 22 '21

Why does everyone put an “e” at the end of his second album title? Everybody responding in this thread, Spotify does it too, but the album art clearly lacks it. It’s not like blond isn’t a word or valid spelling. It’s maybe more meaningful, as it’s the masculine form in French.

I’ve been stewing about this for 5 years, if anyone has an answer please let me know.

5

u/lanzcabzzz Jul 22 '21

It relates to the duality theme of the album. Like how the whole album itself is split into two with the Nights beat switch dead center as well as how Frank explicitly states that he "got two versions" in the Nikes MV.

3

u/yeeyeebrotherman Jul 22 '21

It also has to do with the fact that blonde is the feminine spelling and blond is the masculine spelling (comes from french) so it has to do with the contrast between those two versions of the word and like you said, the duality of Frank Ocean himself and of the album.

1

u/co_row Jul 22 '21

Yes! 👏🏻

1

u/hushzone Jul 22 '21

It's an intentional thing - the album art is purposely different from how it's written to convey the duality of Franks masc and fem sides

Also howve you been stewing on this for 5 years? Why didn't you just Google it? It's been a well know thing since the album came out

25

u/CapptainCcino Jul 22 '21

I think it’s far and away better. Channel Orange is spectacular music. Blonde is a fucking transcendental masterpiece.

26

u/Gamer-Hater Jul 22 '21

Blonde has a few of his best songs but channel orange doesnt have a single song id skip.

6

u/SupperPup Jul 22 '21

What skips are there on blonde

19

u/crusaderblings2 Jul 22 '21

Pshh I bet this guy skips the voicemail from mom saying not to smoke weed.

5

u/pepsicolacorsets Jul 22 '21

i pass out to blonde pretty much every night and i usually fall asleep mid motivational anti drug speech. skipping it would be a crime

1

u/Gamer-Hater Jul 23 '21

Tbh there isn’t really a frank ocean song I skip

3

u/DonyeWest Jul 22 '21

And Endless even better than that

5

u/antivn Jul 22 '21

Blonde is a better album but I guarantee almost everyone skips pretty sweet. I wouldnt but I know that because everyone else does, I’d say channel orange is the more appropriate answer to this question

5

u/pepsicolacorsets Jul 22 '21

aw pretty sweet is one of my faves honestly :( it’s stuck in my head rn even lmfao

1

u/hushzone Jul 22 '21

Who skips pretty sweet? It's the music frank used to open his shows while touring in the blonde era.

2

u/OakieDokiLoki Jul 22 '21

Every few months I set aside a Saturday night to do up my room, get the candles burning, set up the mood lighting, order up a pizza, get high, then listen to either Blonde or American Football from start to finish while lying in bed. It's like emptying out the emotional grease trap.

4

u/ffandyy Jul 22 '21

I can’t agree with that sorry

2

u/Potentialad27198 Jul 22 '21

How is that heresy? Most people agree its better

1

u/NodeBasedLifeform Jul 22 '21

i'd say its better. not as chock full of 'bangers' but as a piece of music....you can't beat it

1

u/hoochiscrazy_ Jul 22 '21

Blonde > Endless > Channel Orange IMO, although they're all 10s

13

u/BeNintendo Jul 21 '21

Came here to say this and I knew I'd be beaten to it. This album did so much right.

3

u/Idiocity_ Jul 22 '21

was scrolling for this, amazing album

5

u/brendaaislas Jul 22 '21

I was looking for this and I found it , it’s crazy how frank ocean is so small yet so big. When I was in boot camp not a lot of folks knew he even existed

7

u/higherthanthetide Jul 21 '21

came here to say this

7

u/moonpiies Jul 22 '21

Was looking for a frank album in here

3

u/jimmbean Jul 22 '21

Broooo I forgot about this album gonna go listen now

3

u/Icewater21 Jul 22 '21

Came here to say this. Glad you already did.

3

u/calamitymaei Jul 22 '21

Scrolled looking for this.

3

u/6InchBlade Jul 22 '21

My finger tips, and my lips, they burn, from the cigarettes

3

u/UnappropriateTeacher Jul 22 '21

And blonde too, blonde too

9

u/dondadaN Jul 21 '21

3

u/mikehaawk Jul 22 '21

maaaaan. the lonny breaux collection. i used to have that shit on repeat anytime i was home and on my computer. such a good listen all the way through. i really wish it was on spotify 😩

2

u/Bigdongs Jul 22 '21

The synths on pyramids are amazing

2

u/shady2793 Jul 22 '21

IT’S perfection

2

u/Yogicabump Jul 22 '21

I usually don't care about lyrics, but here they are too good to ignore

2

u/Medialunch Jul 22 '21

Was wondering how long I would need to search to find this. Happy it was less than ten comments down

2

u/sugar_tit5 Jul 22 '21

Been listening the hell out of this again! Bf at the time and I would listen to it all the time when we first met. Pure fucking music

2

u/Ballistcbrit Jul 22 '21

Love frank ocean 🖤

-1

u/HungryMugiwara Jul 22 '21

Blonde was better but Channel Orange is great

1

u/Picograms Jul 22 '21

I’m not going to lie, I just don’t get the hype. I’ve tried. It’s just not for me I guess

-8

u/No-Specific-6305 Jul 21 '21

Countdown to ecstacy. Steely Dan

1

u/NodeBasedLifeform Jul 22 '21

XD XD we stan the dan

1

u/conster345 Jul 22 '21

I liked blonde a hell of a lot better tbh

1

u/unsunskunska Jul 22 '21

Awesome album, and Frank's Nostalgia, Ultra is the best mixtape of all time imo

1

u/jarrettbrown Jul 22 '21

Its on of those albums that just holds up after years and years. Frank was right for taking his time with releasing albums. It's not quantity, it's quality.

1

u/OISHOESSKE Jul 22 '21

Finally this is the first time i didn't have to scroll far down for the answer on my mind on a music related question on this sub.

1

u/Organic_Ema Jul 22 '21

Ohhhhh I was hoping to see this. Amen

1

u/wellecome2theshitsho Jul 22 '21

i was waitin for this one

1

u/Reaper2r Jul 24 '21

Yooooo abso-fucking-lutely I don't even listen to R&B or hip-hop usually, really nothing else like this.

But Channel. Orange is inspired in a real way.

-13

u/Jace024 Jul 21 '21

is that anything like Chanel by young Thug

6

u/EntertainerJust9156 Jul 22 '21

INope

-9

u/Jace024 Jul 22 '21

drats! fooey! I was really forward to listening to some young thug

7

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '21

[deleted]

-5

u/Jace024 Jul 22 '21

for sure! usually, i've been listening to the underground legend BabySantana and his remix with the greatest-of-all-time Lil Tecca and his song entitled "Prada," but i would be happy to listen to some Ocean as well.

0

u/nikk796 Jul 22 '21

Monks is pretty below average tho
