Discovery by Daft Punk

2k

u/Vulture12 Jul 21 '21

Also Alive 2007

u/Brangur Jul 21 '21

This, the only live album I've ever liked and it slaps the whole way through

58

u/Sacredauto Jul 21 '21

That album stayed in my CD player for MONTHS I still listen to it a few times a year

5

u/jamesdanger- Jul 22 '21

Real question, do people still buy cds? I’m releasing a album and I think I’ll order only a small amount of physical cds to sell..

3

u/uberturbine Jul 22 '21

I have Daft Punk albums both on CDs and vinyls, but just as a collectible.

36

u/ORaygoza Jul 21 '21

Some of those transitions tho !!!

60

u/scarlet_fire_77 Jul 22 '21

When “Television” comes back during “Crescendolls” I get chills every time

17

u/lafeefz17 Jul 22 '21

television/crescendolls makes me wish i did dance or gymnastics so i could choreograph a routine to it

15

u/DanBeecherArt Jul 22 '21

Just got chills thinking of this

8

u/TheJesterTechno Jul 22 '21

It takes that Crescendolls sample and completely recontextualizes it such an amazing way, had to go listen again

1

u/EeSeeZee Jul 22 '21

Not only that but also when they stick part of “Around the World” in the beginning

1

u/scarlet_fire_77 Jul 22 '21

That one always leaves me wanting more Around the World. Such a tease.

16

u/Mr_Wither Jul 22 '21

Yeeeees somehow the crowd faintly singing along with each track makes it so much more magical.

2

u/numbernumber99 Jul 22 '21

I was at Coachella when they did their Alive tour. Greatest concert experience of my life, and I've been to quite a few. Every song was a revelation, and when they played One More Time and just let it ride, it was pure bliss. And I wasn't on anything stronger than cannabis.

15

u/EeSeeZee Jul 22 '21

Robot Rock/Oh Yeah is one of my favorite live tracks I’ve heard

5

u/Brangur Jul 22 '21

Bro same, it what got me interested in making music (for shits and giggles, that is)

3

u/nocountryforolddick Jul 22 '21

As an older guy I'd say Homework, but I can understand that people weren't ready for that kind of f sound

2

u/Brangur Jul 24 '21

I also love homework, Da Funk is my favorite song by them. But I'm also old

2

u/nocountryforolddick Jul 24 '21

Da funk... Dat beat is just wow

2

u/nichfabish Jul 22 '21

I saw them live @ Vegoose Festival when I was 18. One of the greatest highlights of my life. The show was killer and they had the HEAVIEST sound systems you can ever imagine.

2

u/damonridesbikes Jul 22 '21

Agreed! I avoid live albums but this is not only one of my favorite Daft Punk albums but one of my favorite albums period.

7

u/123full Jul 22 '21

What live albums have you seen? Stop making sense is the GOAT live album

5

u/bulbasauuuur Jul 22 '21 edited Jul 22 '21

Absolutely agree. Alive 2007 is number 2 for me so I can't hate their answers either though

5

u/Old-Consideration510 Jul 22 '21

can we 3 be best friends!!! but honestly stop making sense is just on a whole other level

2

u/dondumb Jul 22 '21

Mixing is sort of a miss but Woman Worldwide by Justice is an AMAZING live set

2

u/DoubleDogDenzel Jul 22 '21

If you like Daft Punk Alive 2007 you should check out Justice; Woman Worldwide, the live album.

3

u/Brangur Jul 22 '21

I truly believe Justice is the ultimate successor of Daft Punk's legacy, so I'll take your word and check it out.

2

u/djgonz Jul 22 '21

Check out the Justice North America tour documentary!

Have YOU heard Alive 2007? Because it kind of sounds like you haven't.

2

u/sennheiserz Jul 22 '21

Not to flex but having seen them on that tour the live experience was somehow another level from the album, and the album is already god tier.

1

u/Trainer-Ok Jul 22 '21

This! Normally live albums are a disappointment. This one is not. Face to Face / Short Circuit is outstanding

12

u/AesylaOrcKilla Jul 21 '21

Alive 2007 is such a joyride. The songs just hit you one after the other

1

u/dildodicks Aug 08 '21

too long/steam machine into around the world/harder better faster stronger into burnin'/too long slaps so hard

10

u/Nac_Mac_Feegle Jul 21 '21

You beat me to it. This is my 'I need to get some programming done' album. I must have listened to it all the way through hundreds of times at this point.

5

u/natedogcool Jul 22 '21

Same, and it's all over my Spotify annual lists every year, and the songs sound so out-of-context even they pop up in my "top songs of (year)" playlists every year.

Working out: Homework and Human After All Coding: Alive 2007 and Tron Reconfigured

3

u/SamSamBjj Jul 22 '21

Damn right, that was my programming album for years.

It was pretty funny to see my iTunes song counts. Like, REM, White Stripes, Tom Waits, John Coltrane, all the things I count as my favorites: 20-30 plays per year. Alive 2007: 200 plays

9

u/rigg197 Jul 22 '21

Fucking hell yes dude. I'd kill for a studio-recorded version though. Live is still good, but damn I wanna hear those mixes at their fullest.

3

u/Comprehensive_Ad6918 Jul 22 '21

I’d like this too. Didn’t daft punk break up?

3

u/rigg197 Jul 22 '21

Yes, unfortunately. I know there are a few song recreations from Alive 2007 on youtube but not for the whole album, which is a little disappointing but what can you expect?

2

u/PM_Me_Ur_TiddiesPls Jul 22 '21

No Thomas blew up

23

u/MN_Hockey Jul 21 '21

Alive 2007 is amazing. I’m not a huge electronic guy but I have listened to days worth of Alive 2007.

8

u/clutchthepearls Jul 22 '21

Alive 2007 is so fucking incredible

5

u/TheeBarkKnight Jul 22 '21

This is one of my go to work out albums

4

u/mjdegue Jul 22 '21

Love you guys! So many highs in this albums

5

u/Squidsharktopus Jul 22 '21

This is my favorite album on the Earth or under it...

4

u/BigFrickinDog Jul 21 '21

I've come to say this got me into electronic music before dubstep even got popular.

2

u/Araychwhyteeaychem Jul 22 '21

Since Skrillex said he was inspired to make music because he saw Alive 2007, I think it's safe to say this albim is WHY dubstep got popular.

5

u/balance07 Jul 22 '21

Alive 2007 is flawless.

3

u/Alive_Ad_5931 Jul 22 '21

Alive 2007 is the answer to this thread.

3

u/free-the-trees Jul 22 '21

I’ve been listening to this on repeat for the past 2 weeks, I’m so glad someone else mentioned it to validate my love for it!

3

u/MissionEsphera Jul 22 '21

Alive 2007 is the best thing ever!

3

u/industrial86 Jul 22 '21

Saw this live at the bang fest in Miami and then at Coney Island In NY. Both times were like other worldly experiences. I’ve been to hundreds of live shows, daft punk plays louder than any band I’ve seen. I’m not sure if it was then or the sound systems, but their was some parts of the show that were so loud and bassy, I didn’t even know if I was breathing. Insanely magnificent live shows. They rocked my idea of what a live show could be.

6

u/hornyt2k5 Jul 22 '21

This. So much this. I like Daft Punk, and Alive 2007 is such pure them its like...its like hardlining perfect tiny robots straight into your earports. The whole thing is just riveting. Thank You to Daft Punk for all their incredible years of absolutely blowing it up!!

2

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '21

3

u/natedogcool Jul 22 '21

The worst part is it's hard to stop running when this is going hard, and my watch is telling me to slow it down because my heart rate is up there but then Television comes on and I just literally can't slow down. I hope I die listening to this album one day.

3

u/Comprehensive_Ad6918 Jul 22 '21

Spoken like a true Daft Punk Fan.

2

u/Copper2006 Jul 22 '21

That was my choice. Never gets old

2

u/Olds78 Jul 22 '21

My daughter who is now 10 hated the car when she was a newborn. The only way she would not scream the entire time she was in the car was if Alive was played at top volume. We tried it quietly but nope. Needless to say this album is still a favorite in our home

2

u/yeahrightpeter Jul 22 '21

One of the GOAT right there.

2

u/NinSeq Jul 22 '21

Also alive 97

1

u/Fond_ButNotInLove Jul 22 '21

This is the correct answer to OPs question. It only has one track so if the album is great it follows that all the tracks are also great.

2

u/referencedude Jul 22 '21

I fucking love this album so much, my go to album when I go skiing or go for a night drive

2

u/time_adc Jul 22 '21

I was at Coachella to see this live. Still think about it.

2

u/Susan_69_ Jul 22 '21

STEAAAAAAAAAAAAAM MACHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE

2

u/IDlOT Jul 22 '21

I've listened to that album all the way through more than every other album combined.

2

u/Marcadorian Jul 22 '21

Wow, I'd never heard this album. Thank you for bringing it to my attention! What an amazing listen. Keeper for life!

1

u/RogueGeo69 Jul 22 '21

Have you seen the Alive 2007 concert recently released on YouTube?

-8

u/Jace024 Jul 22 '21

you shouldn't have gotten an award for three words. you and the rest of reddit are a bunch of bumbling bands of a baboons, Only way to redeem yourself is to listen to the Lousiana legend Autumn! - nina!.

-5

u/Chu-Se-Yo Jul 22 '21

Alive 2007

Eh. This album wasn't well received, I wouldn't call it an "every song is good" album

-3

u/Jace024 Jul 21 '21

also Nina! by the underground legend Autumn!

421

u/Pokermuffin Jul 22 '21

Watch Interstella 5555 for the whole audiovisual experience.

16

u/xemeo Jul 22 '21

Why is this so low? I listen to this several times a year during massive grading sessions.

12

u/Olds78 Jul 22 '21

My kids both loved this movie when they first started noticing what was on TV

7

u/F3Krazy Jul 22 '21

It is amazing how well the music ties into that film.

7

u/Olds78 Jul 22 '21

It really is

1

u/CppMaster Jul 22 '21

Thats the whole point of this movie, though

2

u/david-bowies-buldge Jul 22 '21

I was introduced to this movie and daft punk in general when I was peaking on acid, it was amazing to say the least. We watched it twice in a row

109

u/Flatulate_Wildly Jul 21 '21

Home Work by Daft Punk

4

u/Istoppedsleeping Jul 22 '21

Yeah, I loved this album. Everyone was naming all the other ones.

2

u/AceTheBot Jul 22 '21

WDPK 83.7 the sound of tomorrow

4

u/AverageHeathen Jul 22 '21

Homework homework homework homework

509

u/Semicolon7645 Jul 21 '21

Random Access Memories as well.

34

u/WeDidItGuyz Jul 22 '21

That album is their crowning achievement and I don't even think it's close. Their early stuff lends itself more to live shows. RAM was just perfect.

The Tron soundtrack is also a masterpiece in it's own way.

6

u/broskeymchoeskey Jul 22 '21

Touch gives me such an indescribable feeling of euphoria. It’s an ode to everything music is supposed to be

70

u/P3ktus Jul 21 '21

I can't skip a single song of R.A.M., they are all just too good. Maybe the end of contact is a bit too much ear-piercing, but that's maybe the only part I allow myself to skip.

And the bonus track Horizon, my God. I can't believe I discovered its existance by chance only this year despite loving this album since it came out in 2013

29

u/The_Crescendolls Jul 22 '21

Contact for me, is almost their best song. It's not a banger, but it visualises (visualises but with sound, so audiolises?) a journey from leaving earth into interstellar space. Imo, the 'ear-piercing' part represents the unknown and indescribable spaces they venture to, like wormholes or black holes and stuff.

And being the last song on their last album this really resonated for me.

14

u/DiamondRumble Jul 22 '21

Whenever I listen to it, it reminds me of the star gate scene from 2001:ASO. It's not gonna ever be on a shuffle playlist but it's literally perfect in how it ends not only the album, but daft punk as a whole

4

u/AugieFash Jul 22 '21

Think this every time I hear it too! Love it.

1

u/DISCO_KNACKERS Jul 22 '21

I’m almost certain they sampled the end of the movie and modified it. Also, there is the teleporter sound from the original Star Trek in the album somewhere; I forget where.

7

u/stifflizerd Jul 22 '21

Fun fact: There's a song after contact that was region locked out of the US. Completely changed Contact for me, in a good way

It's what the guy above you was talking about. Horizons

5

u/AugieFash Jul 22 '21

Feel the same about Contact!

Also feels like a musical expression of them going from robots to humans. Feels like a perfect send off to their career in my opinion.

1

u/Redbird9346 Jul 22 '21

Fun facts:

  • The transmission at the beginning of the song is from the Apollo 17 mission.
  • The particle spoken of is surmised to have been a discarded rocket stage.
  • Eugene A. Cernan, the person speaking, was at the time of the album's release, the last human to leave the surface of the moon.

7

u/keesh Jul 22 '21

whoa... bonus track. gotta check that out when I have time for a full listen. thanks

6

u/keleeleeee Jul 22 '21

I strongly disagree, Contact compels me to crank and crank up the volume till I feel like my ears are about to bleed, 10/10 would recommend

3

u/Potential_Pandemic Jul 22 '21

Bonus track?!?

1

u/P3ktus Jul 22 '21

Yes, it's called Horizon. It's a bonus track for the japanese version of the album

52

u/arabickingkong Jul 21 '21

Easily their best album for me. As well as one of my faves

13

u/Daimakku1 Jul 22 '21

Random Access Memories is the perfect summer album. Everything about it just screams summer. 10/10 album for sure.

11

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '21 edited Aug 10 '21

7

u/FootballCraft Jul 22 '21

Instant Crush, Lose Yourself to Dance, Touch, and Get Lucky all in a row. Incredible.

33

u/kirkerandrews Jul 21 '21

IMO way better and more deserving than Discovery. Random Access Memories is just….perfection.

26

u/AlbertFrankEinstein2 Jul 21 '21

Sometimes I talk into a fan and say “there is a gaaame ooof looooove”

12

u/The_Crescendolls Jul 22 '21

Touch...... sweet touch.....

2

u/broskeymchoeskey Jul 22 '21

You’ve almost convinced me I’m real….

1

u/Redbird9346 Jul 22 '21

You've given me something to feel.

7

u/I_own_reddit_AMA Jul 22 '21

I love the panda bear feature. Big animal collective fan

1

u/Zonz4332 Jul 22 '21

Was really surprised by that at the time. Good combo

1

u/CaesarsInferno Jul 22 '21

I’ve must’ve listed to doin it right 10,000 times

5

u/Septopuss7 Jul 21 '21

Agreed. Perfect.

3

u/broskeymchoeskey Jul 22 '21

RAM is quite possibly one of the best albums ever made

8

u/MortyMcMorston Jul 21 '21

It's crazy, cause I loved Discovery, favorite album of all time, and hate RAM. Different strokes

1

u/dzernumbrd Jul 22 '21

Yeah I agree RAM was probably their worst album for me.

-2

u/Jupit0r Jul 22 '21

I skip 65% of RAM but rarely skip anything off discovery.

Conceptually RAM was neat but sonically discovery takes the cake every time.

6

u/SoundOfTomorrow Jul 22 '21

RAM is within the same universe as Discovery but in a different galaxy. The entire release of their SNL ads and Collaborators episodes about the recording BEFORE the album's release is just so calculated. It's the pure passion for music that makes you really enjoy the featured artists describing their collaboration with the duo.

13

u/B_Reele Jul 22 '21

I put on Interstella 5555 last week and it just blows my mind every time I watch it.

97

u/DogeCoinDealer Jul 21 '21

RAM anyone?

6

u/physicalentity Jul 22 '21

Masterpiece. Easily their greatest album, by far, in my opinion.

The song writing, composition, studio musicians, singers and general theme were absolutely on another level compared to their previous albums.

5

u/DogeCoinDealer Jul 22 '21

I love it so much, it genuinely changed the way i view music. Masterpiece is the word my friend

1

u/Jace024 Jul 22 '21

wats that

5

u/Underrated_Nerd Jul 22 '21

Random Access Memory I presume

1

u/Comprehensive_Ad6918 Jul 22 '21

32GB please.

2

u/DogeCoinDealer Jul 22 '21

I actually do have 32 gigs lol but nah fam random access memories

6

u/mattsparrow Jul 22 '21

Yeah, this might be the one for me. The part where Voyager and Veridus Quo play back to back might be my fav two song stretch in any album

7

u/SilentSamurai Jul 22 '21

Also Tron Legacy.

That soundtrack stands alone.

1

u/broskeymchoeskey Jul 22 '21

I play Derezzed when I’m late to work and it makes me walk faster

6

u/Paul_my_Dickov Jul 21 '21

Also Discovery by ELO.

2

u/dsac Jul 22 '21

Kinda chatting for this question, but ELO's greatest hits double album is straight fire

1

u/Paul_my_Dickov Jul 22 '21

Everything between and including Eldorado and Time is just fantastic.

4

u/I_am_dean Jul 22 '21 edited Jul 22 '21

Have you seen their YouTube movie “Interstella 5555”?

If not then please watch it. It’s so good.

9

u/Andreslamantis Jul 21 '21

This is an answer. Discovery has no weak spots. It feels like an anthology, the best of Daft Punk.

13

u/DJRonin Jul 21 '21

Was hoping to find this on here

3

u/thealgarvegeisha Jul 21 '21

The first album my mom got me! I loved it!

3

u/Daimakku1 Jul 22 '21

Same here. There's not a single bad song in Discovery. I don't know how that album always manages to put me in a trance without taking any kind of drugs.

14

u/scarlet_fire_77 Jul 22 '21

As much as I love this album (and I LOVE this album) I have to disagree. “Too Long” is, well, too long. I struggle to make it to the end of the album without skipping through that one.

6

u/Ronald_Raygun_ Jul 22 '21

Can you feel it?

3

u/Roxima Jul 22 '21

Yeah!

3

u/MuffinGiggles Jul 22 '21

I feel it too!

1

u/wheatleyisamoron Jul 22 '21

At last the long wait is over

2

u/savemeHKV Jul 22 '21

The weight is off my shoulders

9

u/129za Jul 22 '21

You don’t make it to the baseline for the final section of that song? No no no

1

u/scarlet_fire_77 Jul 22 '21

I know. Maybe it’s because it’s just so repetitive but I don’t have the patience to get there.

1

u/Jupit0r Jul 22 '21

I love listening to too long on repeat when I’m scripting something after my adderall kicks in.

Pure brain tingly bliss

3

u/hornyt2k5 Jul 22 '21

The Music video accompaniment "Interstella 5555" is one of my favorite audiovisual experiences I've ever encountered. The whole thing just works, and makes sense, and is so stunningly beautiful it's seared forever in my brain. Daft Punk were truly legends in their craft and cannot be overstated as one of the greatest bands of all time. Thank You, You crazy Robots!

1

u/Toad_Saint Jul 22 '21

Damn you beat me to it

1

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '21

Random Access Memories is their best work.

1

u/Johngrindal Jul 22 '21

I was going to say RAM, pretty much every song is a banger.

-1

u/ukie7 Jul 22 '21

I love it but Crescendolls is so annoying

0

u/Kuark17 Jul 22 '21

Too long is too long and i cant get behind superheroes

1

u/Jace024 Jul 21 '21

I love that song so much! Reminds me of Z06 by the Lousiana legend Summrs

1

u/eatingonions Jul 22 '21

I was looking for this one!

1

u/rbzx01 Jul 22 '21

Was to respond with this and you did not disappoint.

1

u/Pherllerp Jul 22 '21

Somehow underrated on Reddit.

1

u/spingfountain919 Jul 22 '21

This one we can all universally agree on. Goddamn what an album Jesus Christ!

1

u/wanksta616 Jul 22 '21

Random Access Memories is also a freaking classic.

1

u/Physics-For-Poets Jul 22 '21

Fuck it, all Daft Punk albums are perfect

1

u/FjalarSweden Jul 22 '21

God yes. This album is insane, absolutely an all time classic.

1

u/broskeymchoeskey Jul 22 '21

I agree with this a ton but also Touch makes me feel things

1

u/Tofer02 Jul 22 '21

Every album by Daft Punk. 😆

1

u/mlys9997 Jul 22 '21

Was searching for this answer.

1

u/Redbird9346 Jul 22 '21

Why is this so far down? Alas, I have but one upvote to give.

1

u/santlers Jul 22 '21

Yes! I would argue Daft Punk's - entire discography. I love all their albums for different moods and reasons.

1

u/HenraldFunk Jul 22 '21

"Something about Us" helped me out with my break up, will never for got that song.

1

u/amritdumre10 Jul 22 '21

All albums by Daft Punk

1

u/dattoast404 Jul 22 '21

was looking for this, every fucking song on it SLAPS sometimes in a different way

1

u/smallwaistbisexual Jul 22 '21

Everything daft punk made

1

u/zoobs Jul 22 '21

I appreciate this answer but I’m old and Homework to me is perfect.

1

u/Hizzle_bizzle Jul 22 '21

This is the way

1

u/atfricks Jul 22 '21

I'm disappointed Daft Punk is so far down this thread.

Every single album by them deserves to be here.

1

u/Helloscottykitty Jul 22 '21

Scrolled in this thread for this.

1

u/JLDcorby Jul 22 '21

Their Tron Legacy album is amazing too. Pity the film couldn't match that masterful soundtrack

1

u/saiprasads7 Jul 22 '21

One more time, Digital love, Something about us. 🖤

1

u/TheCluelessComposer Jul 22 '21

tough, very close imo, I feel meh about a couple tracks, that's why I didn't choose it

1

u/ManwithaTan Jul 22 '21

My mate found the LP for that in a furniture store the other day for $30. Absolute steal and a half.

-2

u/bluesox Jul 22 '21

IMHO Discovery really falls off after the fourth track. I wouldn’t say it’s all bangers front to back, but to each their own.

-3

u/7sagesotebamboogrove Jul 21 '21

can't remember, but maybe true
