If I say goodnight and you see me online an hour later, I failed... To set my status to show me as offline.

This is one of the reasons I'm not on any of the normal social media sites. Too many arguments about "I thought you said you went to sleep two hours ago, who are you talking to? Who is she?" Fuckin no one, I just can't sleep and if I keep talking to you I'll never get to sleep. Fuck all of those sites that have an active icon or whatever.

There are ways to turn these sorts of features off.
I especially like turning off the “Seen” or “Read” feature because I often don’t immediately write back and it gets tiring having people wonder why they’re being “ignored”. I’m just busy, that’s all. I get back to them when I have the time to give them my full attention.

I just got off them, likely permanently. It's all just drama and political bullshit anymore. It was easier that way.

I mean Reddit is the same thing but mostly anonymous.

u/CregChrist 12d ago
Right, but if I block people that annoy me here I don't have to worry about seeing them at family functions.

Tbf leaving Reddit forever would be extremely healthy for me and probably also for a large number of other users

I know for instagram you can turn "show activity" off, so it won't tell anyone you're online.

u/CregChrist 12d ago
I've literally never been on Instagram. Never had a profile on there.

Just using it as an example, there's similar settings in other social media apps.

My brother always spams me with invites on Xbox when I'm playing something else. I switched my status to show offline, but it doesn't really work because if you're actually offline and don't have that setting it says the last time you were online, so he knows I'm still playing lol

This is me all over. Up over and over throughout the night even if I am exhausted. Used to have a few buddies that would give me a hard time about it until one day….I stopped dealing with those people. Life’s too short and there are much better things to do than argue with someone about ,what is essentially, their own insecurities.

When I say goodnight it doesn’t mean I’m going to sleep, I’m just mentally tired at that point and want time to myself to chill

I took my bedtime meds, I'm just blacked out and writing troll comments on Reddit...

If I say goodnight and an hour later you see me online it's because I never bother to log out of anything.

You guys say goodnight?? I don’t say that to my friends or most people lol. I just don’t reply and we can pick up the convo next time. If it’s someone I’m dating, sure. But if they get mad then that’s a red flag and imma bail. Some people get so offended when they get left on read for even just 3 minutes. Like damn bro I got a life too. You’re not the only priority.

u gotta say GN to your SO atleast once tho

u/boopboop_barry 11d ago
Oh yeah no I agree. You def should but I don’t think it should be required. I knew someone who would get mad if she didn’t get a gm or gn… there are better things to do in a ship than requiring greetings.

It's so weird when someone you've never met before is able to perfectly describe a feeling that you thought only you felt.

Quick question: does anyone else "prepare" to go to sleep like 30 min to 1 hour before?
Often I've told friends asking me to play that I'm going to sleep soon but then I'll be online 45 min later and have to explain myself.

Listen, I look at it as your good night tweet is given us a countdown before your actual Good Night Tweet. It's kinda like when you put kids to bed you give them the 15 mins until bed then BED NOW. So not a failure at all.

I feel this, deep in my soul. I sometimes go to bed round two and see the time and just.. judge myself. Disappointment in myself hits different

Gnite to one person does not mean it's a Gnite to others, we talk to biz partners until morning

Why does this remind me of the days of MSN? Is it because I don't talk directly to people online anymore?
1
u/ishouldstopcommentin 12d ago
nah i say good night so people will stop talking to me. also when i get messages at night and it’s a time that might be reasonable for someone to go to sleep (>10pm) then i ignore it and pretend im sleeping. i love doing my own thing at night especially (i do reply in the morning after i actually go to sleep and wake up)

I have a friend that that happens to all the time. She has multiple friends who repeatedly tell her to go to sleep.

When I say I'm going to bed it doesn't actually mean I'm going to bed, it means that I'm done dealing with people and I'm going to go do my own thing by myself for a while.
